U10 Newtown Hawks Sweep Weekend Double Header

The U10 Newtown Hawks’ softball team swept a weekend doubleheader with a 24-4 thumping of the Ridgefield Tigers and an 8-0 blanking of the Stamford Stars.

In the first game, against Ridgefield, the Hawks scored seven runs in the first inning and never looked back as the defense behind pitcher Mikayla Kuligowski held Ridgefield to the minimum batters through three innings. Molly Begg came on in relief to finish out the game. Newtown’s hitting was led by Katie Laaksonen who had a double and two singles to drive in four runs. Caitlyn Linden, Aimee Alexander, Katie Mossbarger, Shannon Mullins and Gillian Galante each collected two singles.

In the second game, the Hawks shut out Stamford behind strong pitching from Gillian Galante and Lauren Wilcox. Although the Hawks scored in each of the first three innings, the game was tight until the fifth when Kuligowski led off with a single to spark a three-run inning. Linden had a double and Galante and Emily Woznick each contributed a single to led the Hawks.
