Newtown Knights Advance In Jimmy Fund Tourney

After beating Oxford 3-1 on Sunday, the nine-year-old Newtown Knights scored five early runs then held off a strong West Norwalk team 5-2 to further advance in the Bethel Jimmy Fund Tournament on Monday night.

Against West Norwalk, Matthew Gerics, Jack Moulder and Jamie Cochrane pitched two innings each and allowed just four hits in six innings. Gerics was especially sharp on the hill. The Knights, led by Justin “Bone” Dunn, Patrick Conte and Shawn Fulton, were strong in the field. Chris Blanco was solid behind the plate and threw out two base runners attempting to steal. Peter Clifford, Matt Davis and Bobby Haskins were also impenetrable defenders who made plays in the field throughout the game.

At the plate, base hits by Sam Duffy, Timmy LeBlanc, Blanco, Moulder, Dunn and Conte contributed to the win.

Early next month, Newtown will host the nine-year-old district tourney at Liberty Field on Elm Drive.

The first game is scheduled for July 6 at 5 pm.
