Howard F. Bowles, Jr, 68, died at his home in Newtown, June 22, after a long struggle with cancer. He was the husband of Barbara (Binsacca) Bowles. Mr Bowles was born October 28, 1939, in Bronxville, N.Y., a son of Howard and Beatrice (Strom) Bowles.
He grew up in Bedford, N.Y., where he graduated from Fox Lane High School. He graduated from Wesleyan University in 1961.
From 1961 to 1967, Mr Bowles was a pilot in the United States Air Force, where he attained the rank of captain. A Vietnam War veteran, Mr Bowles participated in Operation Ranch Hand.
After separation from the Air Force, Mr Bowles was a pilot flight engineer with Pan American World Airways until furloughed. He worked a variety of jobs locally until retiring to devote his life to his family and volunteer work. Mr Bowles volunteered at the Newtown Congregational Church, Newtown Youth & Family Services, and the Nettleton Preserve.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Abby, and son-in-law, Stephen Vopelak; as well as his brother-in-law Victor; sister-in-law Karen; and nephew David Binsacca.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am, Friday, June 27, at the Newtown Congregational Church.
 In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street, Newtown CT 06470; or the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF), 383 Main Avenue, 5th Floor, Norwalk CT 06851.
Arrangements are in the care of the Honan Funeral Home, Newtown.
