Bysiewicz Honors World War II Veterans
Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz honored nearly 100 Newtown residents who are World War II veterans at a public service awards ceremony at Newtown High School on June 23. The ceremony marked the 20th public service award presentations to veterans of World War II by the Office of the Secretary of the State.
âAfter summoning the courage to defeat tyranny, you had courage and strength to change our country for the better,â Ms Bysiewicz told the crowd. âYou did it without great fanfare â without seeking recognition â never asking to be honored. Today we salute you as the Greatest Generation.
âServing your country is what America is all about,â Ms Bysiewicz continued. âEach person here is a testament to the civic pride and involvement that is the foundation of our civic life.â
Each veteran received a citation signed by Secretary Bysiewicz. At the conclusion of the formal program, veterans were invited to pose for photos and share their stories of their time in the service.
Mondayâs event was part of an ongoing effort by the Secretary of the Stateâs office to recognize volunteers and public servants. The Office of the Secretary of the State Public Service Awards Program began in 2001. Since then, the office has honored more than 16,000 people in Connecticut for their commitment to public service, including elected officials, professional firefighters, volunteer coaches, community and youth volunteers, board and commission members, emergency service workers, and elections officials.
Another awards ceremony, this one honoring veterans who served in all conflicts since World War II, was also held at Newtown High School this week. Please see page C-6 for coverage of that event.
