To kick off the fifth season of the Rising Star Summer Basketball League, there will be a free clinic on Tuesday, July 8, at Treadwell Park for all players (boys and girls, grades 6-9) interested in participating.

All players are encouraged to join coach John Quinn and Newtown High School varsity players. Offensive and defensive skill development, geared to the “rising star,” will be the focus of the clinic. Drills and contests are planned as well.

Registrations will also be available for those players who have not yet registered with the Parks and Recreation Department. At the conclusion of the clinic, coach Quinn will meet with all the parents to discuss the program objectives of the Rising Star, talk about the summer league, and answer any questions.

League play will begin Thursday, July 11.

“Our objective with the basketball programs at Newtown High School is to build winning programs for many years to come,” said coach Quinn. “We are thrilled about the potential we see in many of our younger players and we are offering an opportunity for players to further develop their basketball skills.”

At NHS this winter there will be a lot of excitement on the court as Andrew Fiscella and Kelley Haines each reach for the 1,000-point barrier and the teams challenge for a South-West Conference championship.

So, come play this summer in the Rising Star Summer Basketball League, sponsored by Newtown Park and Recreation. Teams (coached by NHS varsity players) will be playing two games per week in the evenings at Treadwell Park. Playoffs, clinics, and an All Star game are also planned.

Each participant will receive a league t-shirt with the NHS Nighthawk basketball logo!

Fee is $65 (please note the program code is 41020A for the boys and 41020B for the girls).

Meanwhile, coach Quinn has worked out an arrangement for all Newtown basketball players to attend a camp run by coach Joe DeSantis, head basketball coach at Quinnipiac University. Coach DeSantis has offered a special rate ($210 per week), plus free transportation to and from camp.

Sessions will run July 14 –18 and August 4-8. Camp meets from 9 am to 4 pm (transportation to and from Saint Rose School). Each camper receives a camp T-shirt and camp basketball.

Anyone players interested, call coach Quinn at 270-7275.
