Joseph M. Goncalves

Joseph M. Goncalves, 80, of Dana Road, Danbury, husband of Mary (Parisi) Goncalves, died at Laurel Ridge Nursing Center in Ridgefield on June 18.

Mr Goncalves was born in New Bedford, Mass., June 24, 1922, son of the late Manuel and Emelia Goncalves

In addition to his wife, Mr Goncalves is survived by four sons, Alan Goncalves and his wife, Pauline, of Newtown, John Goncalves and his wife, Phyllis, Gary Goncalves and his wife, Doreen, and David Goncalves, all of Danbury; a sister, Laurinda Goncalves of Waterbury; a brother, Charles Goncalves of Dennis, Mass; and five grandchildren.

During World War II, Mr Goncalves served with the Anti-aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion, Battery “B” and received the Award of Silver Star for “distinguishing himself by gallantry in action on December 20, 1944, in the area of Samree, Belgium.”

Following the war, Mr Goncalves married his wife of 56 years and moved to Danbury. He worked for the Barden Corporation for 34 years and retired in the mid 1980s. He was a member of St Joseph Church, a former member of the Portuguese American Club, the Richter Park Men’s Club and following his retirement had worked as a “starter” at Richter Park, and had also worked at the Green Funeral Home in Danbury.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St Joseph Church, Danbury, on June 21. Burial with military honors took place in St Peter Cemetery.
