Great pitching, excellent defense, clutch hitting â it all came together for the Screaming Eagles in the Newtown Babe Ruth Baseball AAA championship game.
The Screaming Eagles nipped Robert Ponsky DDS, 2-1, last week for the title. Grant Braun pitched three strong innings, limiting Ponsky to just one hit and one run, and he was helped by great defense as the Eagles turned double plays in each of the first two innings.
Sean Maher and Zach Dent combined on the mound to hold Ponsky scoreless over the last three innings while scattering three hits and striking out eight.
John Wlasuk had the key hit for the Eagles, knocking in the winning run. Shea Boyle and Dent also added clutch hits. RJ Roman and Michael Zaccaro played great behind the plate while Garrett Quinn was outstanding defensively.
Ponsky, coming off of an exciting 10-inning win in the semifinals, had Robert Carroll, Derek Krewson and Christian Gregorie combine to pitch an excellent game, yielding just three hits while striking out ten. Â Jacob Barrett was the hitting star with two hits and an RBI. Michael Herring had a strong game at catcher while Brandon Bowen was excellent on defense.
The Eagles reached the finals by virtue of wins over Family Health Care (6-4) and Michael Tobin Plumbing (4-3).
In the win over Family Health, Roman was perfect on the mound, striking out all ten batters he faced. He came in on three occasions after Family Health had loaded the bases to shut the door each time, then pitched a 1-2-3 final inning. At the plate, Roman had two hits and three RBIs.
Tim Culligan added a two-RBI hit. Wlasuk and Scott Boisvert were strong defensively.
Gary Frey, who had two hits and two RBIs, led Family Health. Sean Kennedy added an RBI triple. Â Brandon Rosenberger pitched well while Tim Roberts and Chris Caulfield had excellent games in the field.
In the win over Tobin Plumbing, Zaccaro had an excellent game at catcher and added a two-RBI hit to knock in the winning run. Chris Jennings chipped in with a clutch hit and RBI. Maher pitched two strong innings and had an RBI double while Roman had two hits and also pitched well. Boyle, Quinn and Brandon Weiner all played well on defense.
Ryan Korth lead Tobin with two hits, four stolen bases and pitched two strong innings. Â Steve Braun also pitched well and added a key hit. Â Mikey Tobin, Andrew Seymour and Rob Frangione had great defensive games.

Newtown 16, Bethel 2 â Newtown opened up the Bethel Tournament by putting on a hitting clinic against the home team. The locals banged out 16 hits, including seven doubles, a triple, and a homerun. Eleven different players had hits on the day.
George Zaruba (2-fo-2, two runs scored), Robbie Blanc (3-for-4, six RBIs, homer, three runs scored), Jeff DiNicola (2-for-2, RBI, run scored), Michael Coates (two hits, two RBIs, run scored), Joe Fedak (2-for-3, two RBIs), Nick Nazer (triple) and Keith McGrath (double) powered the offense.
Fedak, Ralph Sergiovanni, and Coates combined on the mound to limit Bethel to five hits and two walks, while striking out four batters.

Villa Restaurant 11, B&K Septic 7 â Troy Larsen and Chris Devaney had four hits apiece while Patrick Mullins and Kurt Liniger had three to lead Villa. For B&K, Patrick Thornberg had a double and triple and Seth Morris hit the ball hard. Joey Fellin led the way for the defense.
Villa Restaurant 6, William Pitt 2 â Abigail Fagerholm had the key double leading Villa to victory. Troy Larsen, Patrick Mullins, Kurt Liniger and Chris Devaney had two hits apiece. For William Pitt, Alec Lockhart played great defense and Billy Whittington and Dean Baye had doubles.
Villa Restaurant 9, B&K Septic 5 â Ryan Lemay led the Villa offense with support from Nick Heron and Robbie Russo. For B&K, Patrick Thornberg and Taylor Rutter had two hits apiece and JP Blanco pitched a scoreless inning.
Acorn Electric 3, Villa Restaurant 0 - Acorn prevailed in a great defensive effort by both teams. Gavin Scallon, David Gerics and Daniel Gustafson all had key first inning hits and Max Lopez chipped in with a long double. Colton Sposta, Kyle Morrissey, Patrick Mullins and Chris Devaney all had two hits for Villa.
Mastercard 7, Curtiss and Crandon 0 â Mario Pizighelli, Robbie Hughes, Kevin LeBlanc, Dylan OâConnor and Gabe Cohen powered the Mastercard offense in the win. For C&C, Michael Lord went 2-for-3 and Austin Ryder pitched a strong inning.
Acorn Electric 1, William Pitt Real Estate 0 â Max Lopez doubled and scored the gameâs only run. Reid Schmidt (2-for-2, double), David Gerics (triple), Daniel Gustafson and Michael Senf chipped in key hits. Gavin Scallon, Schmidt and Gerics combined for three shutout innings for the second straight game.
Curtis And Crandon 4, Acorn Electric 2 â Michael Lord and Jacob Locorotondo sparked the C&C offense, each with multiple hits. Kaleb Rowe, Michael Allwein (two strikeouts) and Stephen Conway pitched scoreless innings. For Acorn, Gavin Scallon (3-for-3, double) and Daniel Gustafson (2-for-2) led the offense, while Reid Schmidt and David Gerics threw two shutout innings. Craig Fabian and Jordan Hensel played well in the field.
