Hit Car While Parking

Newtown Police report Kathleen McKee, 79, of Newtown, operating a 2015 Subaru Impreza, was entering a marked parking space in the parking lot of 8 Simpson Street at 12:54 pm June 12. A 2017 Toyota Camry was parked in the neighboring stall, and the front passenger side corner of McKee’s vehicle struck the rear driver side of the Camry.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Collision Leaving Driveway

Newtown Police report Evan Hildenbrand, 22, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2010 Toyota Rav4, was traveling northbound in the driveway of 14 Church Hill Road, preparing to turn left, at 4:28 pm June 12. Naimetulla Syed, 82, of Newtown, operating a 2019 Honda CR-V, was traveling in the westbound lane of Church Hill Road. Hildenbrand crossed the eastbound travel lanes of Church Hill Road and began entering the westbound travel lane, when the front left bumper of Syed’s vehicle struck the rear right bumper of Hildenbrand’s vehicle.

Syed was evaluated by emergency personnel with the report of pain in his shin, but was not transported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Hildenbrand was issued a written warning for failure to grant right of way at a driveway.

Following Too Close

Newtown Police report Jelani Maynard, 28, of The Bronx, N.Y., operating a 2017 Ram 1500, was traveling northbound on South Main Street at 9:28 pm June 12. He was traveling behind a 2015 Audi A3 operated by Mallory Chila, 27, of Weston. The front of Maynard’s vehicle struck the rear of Chila’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Maynard was issued a verbal warning for following too close.

Car Window Smashed

Newtown Police are seeking the public’s help with regards to a criminal mischief incident that occurred at Nunnawauk Meadows between June 12 and 13. Police state that a parked vehicle’s right rear passenger window was smashed by an unknown object. No items were removed from the vehicle.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Officer Felicia Figol at 203-426-5841.

Police remind citizens to please lock their vehicles and to remove all personal property from inside their vehicles.

Hit Utility Pole

Newtown Police report Aurora Kearney, 17, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2019 Nissan Sentra, was traveling southbound on Toddy Hill Road at 6:29 pm June 13. Kearney was using a cell phone to change to the next song, drove off the roadway and struck a utility pole. The utility pole snapped at the base, but was stable and being supported by the wires.

Kearney complained of pain and was transported to Danbury Hospital. The vehicle was towed.

Kearney was issued an infraction for operation of a motor vehicle while using a hand held mobile electronic device.

Pulled Down Wires

Newtown Police report Oday Sumaidaee, 42, of Chicopee, Mass, operating a 2020 Freightliner Cascadia, was traveling west on Berkshire Road at 6:49 pm June 13. Sumaidaee moved to the eastbound travel lane due to a low hanging communications wire hanging over the roadway, but failed to move far enough, causing the trailer of the vehicle to snag a small section of the wire, pulling it down further. Sumaidaee continued west, not realizing the wires were caught on his trailer, and pulled several hundred feet of wire from the utility poles and onto the roadway.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.

No enforcement action is mentioned in the report.

Damaged Neighbor’s Lawn

Newtown Police report David Greene, 55, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2009 Toyota Tacoma, was parking his truck on a property on Shadblow Trail at 9:27 pm June 13. He says he thought he was in reverse but was in drive, and when he hit the gas, his truck lurched forward onto the neighboring property. Officers observed tire tracks on the basement bilco doors and some of the grass in the yard was ripped up. No signs of impairment were observed on Greene.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Improper Turn

Newtown Police report Barbosa Mangual, 20, of Waterbury, operating a 2015 BMW 328xi, was traveling southbound on South Main Street at 7:47 am June 14. Donald Ramsey, 69, of Newtown, operating a 2018 Honda CR-V, was traveling westbound at the stop sign on Prospect Drive at the intersection of South Main Street. Mangual attempted to turn left onto Prospect Drive and cut the turn short; the front right of his vehicle made contact with the front bumper of Ramsey’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Mangual was issued a written warning for making an improper turn.

Crash On Left Turn

Newtown Police report Debra Lupul, 67, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2021 Mazda CX-5, was traveling west on Church Hill Road at 2:31 pm June 14. Pereira Soares, 36, of Danbury, operating a 2011 Toyota Sienna, was traveling north on Main Street, passing through the intersection of Main Street and Church Hill Road. Lupul entered the intersection to make a left turn onto Main Street, and the vehicles made contact.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Lupul was issued a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way while turning left.

Sideswiped In Driveway

Newtown Police report Linda Gonzalez, 62, of Danbury, operating a 2013 Ford Escape, was making a left turn into the driveway of 52 Church Hill Road at 3:23 pm June 14. Shayleigh Swiski, 20, of Oxford, operating a 1999 Toyota Corolla, was waiting to enter the road from the driveway. Gonzalez’s vehicle sideswiped Swiski’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Vehicle Sought

Newtown Police report that sometime between June 14 and 15, a 2002-07 Ford Focus was traveling southbound on Parmalee Hill Road and while negotiating a left hand curve in the road, the right side view mirror struck a mailbox in front of 15A Parmalee Hill Road. The Ford Focus then left the scene.

Rear Ended On Main Street

Newtown Police report Brian Quinn, 24, of Sandy Hook, was traveling southbound on Main Street at 3:59 pm June 15. He was traveling behind a 2023 Honda CR-V operated by Carrie Lucas, 41, of Southbury. Lucas came to a stop for traffic and the front of Quinn’s vehicle struck the rear of Lucas’ vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Quinn was given a verbal warning for following too close.

Collision At Flag Pole

Newtown Police report Owen Evans, 90, of Trumbull, operating a 2012 Chevrolet Impala, was attempting to make a left turn from Church Hill Road onto Main Street at 12:46 pm June 16. Paladines Sanmartin, 28, of Danbury, operating a Toyota Camry, was traveling on Main Street when her vehicle was struck by Evans’ vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Evans was issued a verbal warning for failure to yield from a stop sign.

Two Injured In Collision

Newtown Police report Nicholas Desrosiers, 34, of Newtown, operating a 2017 BMW X5, was traveling southbound on South Main Street at 8:34 am June 17. Gerard Cole, 67, of Newtown, operating a 2017 Chevrolet Express, was stopped on South Main Street at the north entrance of 301 South Main Street. The front of Desrosiers’ vehicle made contact with the rear of Cole’s vehicle.

EMS responded for injuries to both drivers; Desrosiers was transported to Danbury Hospital. Desrosiers’ vehicle was towed.

Desrosiers was issued an infraction for following too close.

Assault Arrest At Treadwell Park

Newtown Police report that officers responded to the report of an assault at Treadwell Park at 4:07 pm June 17. After an investigation, Anthony Patsy Defonce was determined to be the aggressor and was arrested on the charges of third-degree criminal mischief, second-degree breach of peace, and third-degree assault.

Defonce was released on a promise to appear with a court date of June 27 in Danbury Superior Court.

Unlicensed Driver Arrested

Newtown Police arrested Marco Jaigua-Aguiaiza, 42, of Danbury, at 4:55 pm June 19, on the charge of illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under suspension. He was released on a promise to appear with a court date of July 6 in Danbury Superior Court.

Conspiracy To Commit DUI

Newtown Police arrested Nicole Haferi, 32, of Danbury, at 9:09 am June 20, on the charges of conspiracy to commit reckless driving, conspiracy to commit illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and conspiracy to commit failure to drive in the proper lane. She was released on a $2,500 bond with a court date of July 13.
