Student accomplishments made throughout the 2014-15 school year at Sandy Hook Elementary School were celebrated on Monday, June 15, during the school's annual awards assembly.

"We're going to celebrate some of our fourth graders," said Sandy Hook School Principal Kathy Gombos near the start of the event, "and everyone, and their really hard work."

The 2014-15 school year, Dr Gombos said, was a "great year" and the school community is ready for the summer.

C.H. Booth Library Children's Librarian Lana Bennison spoke to prepare the students for a summer of reading at the library through its Summer Reading program. Ms Bennison shared a number of details from stories about superheros before telling the students that superheros read, too.

Students were celebrated during the ceremony for participating in the school's geography and math programs, the school's Inquiry Science program, for completing physical education challenges, collecting food and taking part in the school's annual Turkey Trot, for reading Nutmeg Book Award books through the school's library this school year, and participating in the school's Recorder Karate program.

Math/science specialist Kris Feda also spoke during the event to highlight summer activities the students can work on in their Summer Math Calendars.

Two retirees, art teacher Leslie Gunn and secretary Joanne Didonato, were also surprised and celebrated during the ceremony. Both Ms Gunn and Ms Didonato were given gifts, which included wooden rocking chairs, books filled with advice on retirement created by students at the school, and landscape paintings created with student thumb prints.

Sandy Hook Elementary School retirees — art teacher Leslie Gunn, left, and secretary Joanne Didonato — sat in their wooden rocking chairs during the school's awards ceremony on June 15. The rocking chairs were just one of the gifts given to the women during the event. "This is just something I didn't expect," said Ms Didonato.
