Samuel Hammitt

US Navy Veteran

Samuel James Hammitt, 84, of Sandy Hook, died at Danbury Hospital, June 22. Born June 23, 1924, in Boones Creek, Tenn., he was the son of Mack and Elizabeth Harrison Hammitt.

Mr Hammitt was a retired plumber, having worked for the State of Connecticut for many years. He was a US Navy Veteran of World War II, and a lifelong member of Newtown Bible Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Samuel Hammitt and his wife, Jeanine, of Woodbury, and Graham Hill and his wife, Beth, of Tilford, Tenn.; a daughter, Elizabeth Goldstein and her partner, Juan Laremont, of Austin, Texas; a brother; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. 

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Ellen Orten Hammitt, and eight brothers and sisters.

Calling hours were scheduled at Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, on Thursday, June 25, from 6 to 8 pm, with a service at 7:30 pm.

A graveside service is to be held Friday, June 26, at 11 am, at Zoar Cemetery in Sandy Hook.
