HARTFORD (AP) â The Board of Trustees for the University of Connecticut approved tuition and fee increases for in-state and out-of-state students Tuesday.
The changes go into effect in July, UConn spokeswoman Karen Grava said.
For in-state students, the total cost for room, board, tuition, and fees for a year will increase by 8.7 percent to $14,894, the university said. Those costs will increase 9.9 percent for out-of-state students, who will pay $26,726.
The increases are slightly more than the ones proposed originally because of costs of the stateâs early retirement offer amid last yearâs state budget crisis, Ms Grava said.
UConn lost more than 300 employees, and anticipated replacing half. UConn later found it necessary to replace 70 percent of the positions to maintain the quality of university services and classes, Ms Grava said.
âWhat we know from all of our research, parents and students are looking for quality when they choose a school. So that is one thing that could take our competitiveness away if we didnât have quality,â Ms Grava said.
The increases follow an 8.7 percent increase for both in-state and out-of-state students last year, Ms Grava said.
