Original Photographic Images And Poetry At Booth Library

The next exhibition of original art at C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street, will open on July 1. Shelton resident John Ulatowski will offer “Place of Rest,” a photographic exhibit with complementary poems that display its subjects in moments of grace, dignity and beauty. An opening reception with the artist is scheduled for Sunday, July 11, from 2 to 4 pm. The exhibition and reception will be in the Olga Knoepke Memorial Meeting Room, on the first floor of the library.

Mr Ulatowski was born in Bridgeport and is a graduate of Sacred Heart University, where he majored in English. His photos have appeared in books published by The International Library of Photography, and he enjoys exhibiting his works whenever possible. He has exhibited previously at the Bridgeport, Easton, New Haven Free Public, Plumb Memorial (Shelton), Ridgefield and Stratford libraries.

Mr Ulatowski also enjoys writing and has had articles published in literary newsletters. He also writes children’s stories.

Mr Ulatowski has been taking photographs since his youth, and the idea of setting his images to poetry seemed to follow as a natural blending of the beauty that can be perceived in each image.

“A reaching crocus in early spring with only days to survive has for us a story of its brief existence before it must fade away,” says Mr Ulatowski. “A mother and baby duck staring out over the reservoir at sunset calls us to listed to the conversation between them of the beauty of life that surrounds them.

“Photography is Spirit,” believes Mr Ulatowski. “It brings you to a realm beyond ourselves. It lets you hold forever what would have been lost forever, and then to graciously pass it on. It is only while photographing that I can find myself and lose myself at the same time.”

“Place of Rest” can be viewed during regular library hours: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 am to 8 pm, Tuesday and Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, and Friday from noon to 5 pm. The library is closed on Sundays during the summer. Call 425-4533 for additional information.
