Occupation: I am the owner of Chintz-N-Prints of Newtown, Inc, at 39 South Main Street; 426-2022. Iâve owned my business since 1966, and this building was put up in 1957. I also had a Chintz-N-Prints store in Brunswick, Maine, for ten years that we closed a year ago. We brought all the inventory down here and then had to fit it into this store. That wasnât easy.
How Long In Newtown: Iâve lived in Newtown since 1970. Before that, I was living in Stamford. I have also spent time in the United States Navy.
Biggest Change You Have Seen In Town: I remember when the shops next door [Stevenâs Diner, Victoria Yarrow, Shear Image, Wendyâs Nail Salon, Singer Sewing Center, Shoe Repair, Luluâs Sister] werenât the Village Square. That strip used to be a roadside motel where we would occasionally stay on Friday nights.
I feel like Newtown is losing the pastoral places, all the four-acre fields we used to see everywhere with no houses or buildings on them. Thereâs more traffic now, of course, and as long as people are coming into my store, Iâm happy.
Family: My wife Suzanne is a tennis teacher for the Newtown Parks and Recreation Department and we have five daughters so far. They are Susan, Victoria, Patricia, Judith, and Laura. Victoria and Patricia are both getting married this summer, in Puerto Rico and Atlanta, respectively.
Laura, 24, is learning the business and works alongside me at Chintz-N-Prints.
Hobbies I like to cut the grass and spend time in Maine.
Pets: We have Lauraâs dog, Nicholas, who is part German shepherd.
Favorite Books Or TV Show: I really only have time to read the newspapers. When I watch TV, itâs usually the news or college basketball.
Most Vivid Memory About Newtown: I have loved watching the deer across the street in the field behind Amaralâs. Living in the Taunton area, we get a lot of wildlife at home, too. There were three turkeys out by the pool the other day. They let me get really close while I was cutting the grass.
Favorite Vacation Spot: We like to go to Maine. Another favorite place is Quebec City in Montreal. We usually go the first week in December and do a lot of shopping. I remember when no one could get Cabbage Patch dolls in the states, and we could buy them in Quebec City. With five girls in the family, that was important.
Personal Philosophy: I try to live and let live, and to enjoy each day. Iâd like to semiretire, but I do enjoy seeing the customers who come into the store and I would miss them if I werenât here.
