Kate Bowen roped a bases-loaded triple to the wall at Newtown Middle School to help lift the Newtown Hawks’ U10 travel team – the defending Connecticut and New England Regional champions – to a convincing season-opening 23-3 win over the Norwalk Zoomers.

Bowen also singled to pace an 11-hit attack. Megan Sajovic added a two-run double and a single while Caitlin Cosgrove chipped in with a pair of RBI singles. Also collecting hits were Elissa Robertson, Nora Lynn Shimko, Marley Koschel, Laura Newberry, Kaila Harrington and Tara Hiteshew.

On defense, outfielder Annmarie Davis made the play of the game when she ran down a screaming single and threw out the runner from right centerfield. On the pitching rubber, Shimko combined with Bowen (six strikeouts in two innings) and Monique Samuelson to fire a four-hitter.
