The Newtown Farmer’s Market held its opening day last Tuesday afternoon at Fairfield Hills.

Since debuting at Fairfield Hills in 2000, Newtown has hosted an annual farmer’s market which allows vendors and small businesses to showcase their products to the community. The farmer’s market this year, run by Market Master Sue Shortt, plans to run through the last week of October with the same hours, 2-6 pm every Tuesday.

Opening day saw many familiar faces such as Wonderland Jam, Ideal Fish, and American Dream Coffee taking the stage to show off their hottest products, but the Farmer’s Market also introduced some new faces.

Wonderland Jams founder Natalie McCraigh noted some of the new vendors.

“We have a freeze-dried candy vendor, a mushroom vendor, and then of course we have Grumpy Dumpling,” she said.

Though Grumpy Dumpling only recently burst into the food scene (in 2022), they have exploded since their first market and made their first appearance at this year’s Newtown Farmers Market.

The Healing Herb Garden, now in its third year, knows the importance of farmer’s markets.

“We are a Newtown-based small scale medicinal farm grower so we know how very important it is that people know that we are here and hopefully support us,” said owner Kitti Deak.

The farmer’s market serves to help local businesses interact more with their customers and give each business a chance to branch out into bigger things. Due to the Newtown markets and other local ones, The Healing Herb Garden and Earth Path Sanctuary were both able to get their product into local stores, their employees noted June 18.

The Farmer’s Market season is only just beginning and with new and old faces, vendors hope to introduce Newtown residents to only their best quality products.
