While the threat of an early summer storm moved the Summer Jam Concert Series opener to an indoor venue this week, the enthusiasm of children and adults like filled the gym at Hawley School with enough happy energy that the last-minute change of plans was quickly overcome.

Vanessa Trien and The Jumping Monkeys opened this year’s season of free concerts on June 23, and a few hundred people crowded into the Church Hill Road location to enjoy the show.

Children spun, twirled, giggled, laughed and danced their way through this song and every other one that made up the approximately 75-minute show.

The series is a program of Newtown Parks & Recreation. Each event will last approximately one hour.

Performances are for all ages, with a special focus on children age 10 and under.

The series will continue on June 30 with a performance by two-time Grammy nominee Brady Rymer and the Little Band That Could, making their Summer Jam Concert Series debut.

July 7 will feature a return by the interactive, fiddling fun, hoedown performers The Bossy Frog Band

The Dream Jam Band will headline the following week, on July 14. In addition, The Emergency Ice Cream Truck will make a stop, and there will be a special activity hosted by The Ben’s Lighthouse Project.

On July 21, PBS mega personality Steve Songs (a/k/a Mr Steve); and July 28, a return performance by Cincinnati-based Grammy nominee Zak Morgan.

This year’s series will conclude on August 4 with a performance by Latin Grammy nominee Mister G.

Concerts may be moved from the bandshell to the park’s pavilion in the event of light rain. For more severe weather, like this week, a performance will be moved to an indoor location within town.

Rain delays or other program changes will be announced through Parks & Rec, as well as on The Newtown Bee’s Facebook page if they need to be made.

For additional information contact Parks & Rec at 203-270-4340.

Vanessa Trien spins a young audience member during the performance of “Bubble Song.” The children were following Ms Trien’s lead in putting their hands in the air, and mimicking the look of a bubble softly floating through the air.
Jack Cartolano was the lead in a conga line that started small but eventually reached around three of the gymnasium’s four walls. Summer Jam Concert Series performances will continue weekly through August 4. The free concerts begin at noon at Dickinson Park, unless weather forces a move to an indoor venue.
Vera Cherepinsky and her son Matthew appeared to have a great time during Tuesday’s concert by Vanessa Trien and The Jumping Monkeys. They are seen here during the performance of “High Five.”
