Girls Run Away With WCC Youth Track Title, Boys Place Third

The Newtown Hawks Intermediate/ Middle School track program wrapped up the outdoor track season by hosting the Western Connecticut Conference league championship meet at Blue and Gold Stadium on June 15. The girls’ team won the first ever WCC championship trophy and the boys’ squad finished third in the league of 12 teams.

Led by Micaela Nowacki, the league champion in the shot put, with a throw of 32-8 and the league champion and record holder in the discus event, with a toss of 72-2, the girls had an undefeated season.

The boys’ team fell to Shaghticoke and New Fairfield. In a league record performance, the boys’ 4x4 relay won the race in 4:16.2 with Joel Duval, 1:09.6, Adam Huffman 1:04.3, Vanya Donaher 1:03.6, and Will Roman :58.5 comprising the relay squad.

Other top Newtown performers included Annika Alexander, second in the shot, 30-2.5, and Jess Shairer, eighth in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet. Megan Huwer, Kelly Coughlin, Annika Fagerholm, and Amy Martinelli made up the 4x400 relay team which earned fifth place. Grace Larson, Sami Arnold, Megan Huwer, and Jess Shairer combined for eighth place in the 4x100 relay. Hannah Schwartz was sixth in the 800 meter run in a time of 2:49. In the long jump event, Sami Arnold’s jump of 12-6.5 was good for fourth, and Jess Coughlin took sixth with a jump of 11-8.

The boys added points with Adam Woodbyrne coming in fifth in the 100, and Will Roman third and Austin Huffman fourth in the 400. Vanya Donaher ran a 2:27 in the 800 to capture second, and Joey Whelans had a 5:26 in the 1600 to capture fifth place.

Will Roberts had a 4-4 high jump to take eighth, and Doug Main was fifth in the shot with a 27-5 and the discus with a 76-7.
