Police Plan Sobriety Checkpoint

Police plan to conduct a sobriety checkpoint on the night of Friday, June 24, and early morning hours of Saturday, June 25.

Police did not disclose the road where they will hold the checkpoint. Nine patrol officers and one sergeant are slated to participate in the event intended to get intoxicated motorists off the road.

Police will stop all passing motorists to learn whether drivers are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Brief interviews will be conducted. People who are suspected of being intoxicated will be tested for sobriety.

Violators will be arrested. Those who arrested will be brought to the police station for processing and will be issued court appearance dates. Police also will be enforcing seatbelt laws during the checkpoint, among other motor vehicle laws.

Three-quarters of the overtime pay that police receive to work at such checkpoints is covered with funds from a state highway safety grant. Police plan to hold more sobriety checkpoints in July and August.
