More than 40 Newtown High School athletes received All-SWC first team, second team or honorable mention selections recently. Also, pitcher Steve Marks and Lisa Morgan were named to their respective All-State baseball team.

For Morgan, it was a spring of unrivaled success. While setting the school softball strikeout record at an astounding 680, she was selected to the All-SWC team for the third straight year and was nominated for the All-Area teams of two local newspapers. Her All-State selection was the first for Newtown softball since Erica Christopher received the honor in 1998.

On Wednesday, June 15, Morgan started (and earned the win in) the CHSCA East-West L/LL All-Star game at DeLuca Field in Stratford. She pitched four shutout innings, struck out seven of the top hitters in the state, ripped a line drive to left-center, advanced on a fielder’s choice, then to third on an overthrow, and scored when she noticed the fielders weren’t paying attention.

After all that, Morgan – who helped the Lady Nighthawks reach the SWC championship game by snapping Lauralton Hall’s 58-game unbeaten streak – was named MVP of the West squad.
