Hawley Kindergartener

Wins Writing Contest

Kathryn Blanco, a kindergarten student at Hawley School, was awarded second place in the 11th annual Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest. Her original story Brother Trouble was inspired by the day-to-day peskiness and tenderness of her younger brother.

Kathryn entered the contest after learning about it from watching the Reading Rainbow program. More than 500 students from the New York metropolitan area entered the contest. The contest is open to children in kindergarten through third grade with each grade level being judged separately.

The first place winners will have their stories submitted to the national competition. While Kathryn’s story will not be submitted to the nationals, she and her family enjoyed a festive award ceremony and party at the Brooklyn Public Library last month. At the end of the event the children were given a variety of gifts to inspire them to continue their creative efforts.

Brother Trouble along with the other first, second and third place stories from each grade level will be posted this summer on the WNET Channel 13 website link for the Reading Rainbow show.
