Great Hill Theft

Sometime during the week of June 5, someone entered an unlocked, detached garage at a residence on Great Hill Road and stole items including a laser-controlled transit, an air compressor, a table saw, a circular saw, and a power drill, police report.

The crime entails third degree burglary and fourth degree larceny. Police are investigating and ask anyone with information on the theft to contact them at 426-5841.

South Main Collision

Police report a two-vehicle collision near 71 South Main Street about 2:47 pm June 15.

Northbound motorist Alison Sikora, 21, of Middlebury, who was driving a 1992 Toyota Camry, stopped and was waiting to make a left turn into a parking lot, when northbound motorist Brian McNeill, 23, of 10 Pole Bridge Road, who was driving a 1992 Ford truck, struck the Toyota from behind, police report.

Newtown ambulance volunteers treated Sikora at the scene, police said. McNeill received a verbal warning for traveling at an unreasonable distance, according to police.

Marijuana

About 8:33 pm June 15, police charged Brian P. Coughlin, 26, of 9 Riverside Road, Sandy Hook, with possession of less than four ounces of marijuana and with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police said the arrest came following an ambulance call to that address, at which it was learned that Coughlin was in possession of the drug. In that call, ambulance staffers transported an unidentified female to Danbury Hospital for treatment, police said. 

Police said that after processing the arrest, they released Coughlin on a promise to appear June 30 in Danbury Superior Court.

Failure to Appear

Police arrested Jonathan Butler, 18, of Clinton on a warrant about 7 am June 14, charging him with first degree failure to appear in court. After learning that police held a warrant on him, Butler had turned himself in at the police station.

Police additionally charged Butler with second degree burglary, third degree larceny, second degree forgery, theft of a credit card, and three counts of illegal use of a credit card. The various charges stem from an August 2004 burglary, according to police.

After posting $5,000 bail, police released Butler for a June 28 court appearance.

High School Drugs

On the afternoon of June 16, Newtown High School administrators told police that a 15-year-old male student there was in possession of drugs, so police investigated.

Police charged the boy with three counts of possession of a controlled substance and also with possession of drug paraphernalia. The drugs in the boy’s possession were marijuana and two types of unspecified prescription medication, which the boy was not authorized to have, police said.

After processing the boy’s arrest, police released him into his father’s custody for a June 27 court date at Danbury Juvenile Court.

State law shields the identities of people under age 16 who are charged with crimes.

Moving Violations

Police report that at about 7:44 pm June 16, they spotted motorist Roger Ho-Yen, Jr, 21, of 16 Chimney Swift Drive driving on Riverside Road without a front marker plate on his vehicle.

Police charged Ho-Yen with driving while under suspension and with failure to display a front marker plate. Police released Ho-Yen on a promise to appear June 30 in Danbury Superior Court.

High Bridge Crash

Police report a two-car accident on High Bridge Road about 9:30 pm June 16.

Motorist Jennifer Metranga, 40, of Monroe, who was driving a 2004 Ford Mustang, stopped behind another motorist, who was making a left turn into a driveway, police said. Motorist Sarah Devellis, 18, of 16 Rowledge Pond Road, who was driving a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta sedan, then struck the Ford from behind, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Devellis an infraction for following too closely.

Toddy Hill Road

Police said that while on patrol on the evening of June 18, they spotted motorist Jennifer Corsino, 25, of Bridgeport traveling on Toddy Hill Road without a front marker plate, so they stopped her to investigate.

Police charged Corsino with driving while under suspension and with failure to display a front marker plate. After processing, police released Corsino on $100 bail for a July 6 court appearance.

Hanover Collision

About 3 pm June 15, motorist William Moseley, 17, of 191 Hanover Road, who was driving a 1989 Honda Accord coupe, stopped near 192 Hanover Road, police said.

At that time, motorist Judy Crane, 50, of 192 Hanover Road, who was driving a 2003 Honda Civic sedan, was backing out of a driveway and struck the Accord, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Crane a written warning for unsafe backing.

I-84 DUI

After receiving many Emergency-911 calls about an erratic driver, state police stopped motorist Mark W. Swan, 43, of New Fairfield about 12:30 pm June 19 on westbound Interstate 84, near Exit 10.

On investigating, state police arrested Swan on charges of driving under the influence and failure to stay in the established lane. After booking Swan’s arrest, state police released him on $500 bail for a June 27 arraignment in Danbury Superior Court.

Highway DUI

State police report that motorist Alexander Shafir, 55, of Watertown, who was driving a 2004 Toyota Highlander sport-utility vehicle, slowed for traffic conditions on westbound Interstate-84’s Exit 11 off-ramp about 8:17 am June 16, and was struck from behind by motorist David T. Haddad, 61, of Waterbury, who was driving a 1997 Jeep Wrangler sport-utility vehicle.

There were no injuries. On investigating, state police charged Haddad with driving under the influence and with following too closely.

After booking Haddad’s arrest, state police released him on $500 bail for a June 30 court appearance.

Interstate Collision

About 8:46 am June 14, motorist Kathleen Farrell, 42, of Monroe, who was driving a 1999 Ford Explorer westward on Interstate 84, near Exit 9, encountered slowing traffic conditions, state police said.

Motorist Joanne Andrew, 37, of 17 The Old Road, who was driving a 2004 Honda Civic, then struck the Ford from behind, state police said. There were no injuries. State police said they warned Andrew for the collision.

I-84 Impact

Motorist Kelly Sheehan, 27, of 6 Clearview Drive, who was driving a 2003 Volkswagen Beetle eastward on Interstate 84, east of Exit 9, about 4:56 pm June 13, moved from the slow-vehicle lane into the right travel lane and struck tractor-trailer trucker Rodney Stinson, 45, of Hattiesburg, Miss., state police said.

There were no injuries. State police issued Sheehan an infraction ticket for making an unsafe lane change.

Hawleyville Road

Police said that while on patrol about 5:12 pm June 20, they spotted motorist Mark Osiecki, 45, of Brookfield driving on Hawleyville Road, near Interstate 84, without a front marker plate on his vehicle, so they stopped him.

On investigating, police charged Osiecki with failure to display a front marker plate and with driving while under suspension.

After posting $100 bail, police released Osiecki for a July 7 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Rear-End Collision

Motorist Jean Otton of St George Place, who was driving a Hyundai Sonata westward on Church Hill Road on the afternoon of June 10, slowed and then stopped in order to make left turn, when the Hyundai was struck from behind by westbound motorist David Kean of Sugar Street, who was driving a Chevrolet Caprice, according to police. There were no injuries. Police issued Kean a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Three Violations

Police said that while on patrol about 1:51 am June 20, they stopped motorist George Guevarez, 44, of Danbury on Route 6 because he had a cancelled vehicle registration.

On investigating, police charged Guevarez with driving an unregistered vehicle, driving while under suspension, and driving without automotive insurance.

After arrest processing, police released Guevarez on a written promise to appear July 6 in Danbury Superior Court.

Vehicular Vandalism

Sometime between 9:15 and 9:30 pm on June 11, someone apparently used a key to deface the exterior of a red Subaru sedan that was parked outside the Dunkin’ Donuts shop at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street. Patrol Officer Gary Wheeler is investigating and asks anyone with information on the incident to contact police at 426-5841, or at 270-8888.

Computer Theft

On June 17, the principal of Newtown Middle School informed police that her laptop computer was missing from her school office.

On investigating the complaint, police learned that a male student had been serving an in-school suspension in the principal’s office on June 16.

On June 18, that boy brought the missing computer to the police station and was arrested on a charge of third degree larceny, police said. The charge is felony involving the theft of goods worth more than $1,000.

Police released the boy into the custody of his mother for a June 27 appearance at Danbury Juvenile Court. The identity of people under age 16 who are charged with crimes is shielded by state law.

 

DUI Crash

Motorist Claudio Basso, 45, of 3 Knollwood Drive was driving an automobile southward on Mile Hill Road South about 2:08 pm June 18, when he drove off the road’s northbound shoulder and struck a utility pole, breaking it, police said.  The accident occurred south of Mile Hill Road South’s intersection with Nunnawauk Road.

Basso was not injured, police said. Police charged Basso with driving under the influence and with failure to drive to the right on a curve.

The accident required utility crews to install a new utility pole, posing travel delays.

Police said they released Basso on $80 bail for a July 6 court appearance.

Main Street Collision

Motorist Charles Rio, 28, of Stratford was driving a 2000 Jeep Cherokee southward on Main Street near the police station about 8:30 am June 20, when southbound motorist James Mulberry, 47, of 70 Currituck Road, who was driving a 1998 van, backed up into the front end of the Jeep, police report.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Mulberry for unsafe backing.

Church Hill Accident

About 10:07 am June 20, motorist Rosa Wai, 43, of Southbury, who was driving a 2000 Honda Accord westward on Church Hill Road, put on a turn signal and attempted to make a left turn into a driveway, when the Honda was struck from behind by westbound motorist Helen Palkimas, 85, of 4 Waterview Drive, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Palkimas a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Warrant Arrest

As he was finishing his jail sentence on a conviction for first degree reckless endangerment, Newtown police on June 22 served an arrest warrant against Gregory Petro, 27, of Watertown at the Brooklyn Correctional Institution in eastern Connecticut.

Newtown police charged Petro with second degree failure to appear in court, speeding, driving under the influence, reckless driving, evading responsibility, and disobeying a police officer’s signal.

Those charges stem from an incident last September 13 on Glen Road in Sandy Hook.

Police held Petro on $10,000 bail for a June 23 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

SUV Off Road

About 4:07 pm June 21, Kamran Farzan, 62, of 57 Eden Hill Road was driving a 1996 Ford Explorer westward near 9 Castle Meadow Road, when the vehicle went out of control, sideswiped a large tree and then displaced a large amount of soil from alongside the road, police said.

Farzan was not injured, according to police. Farzan received an infraction ticket for making a restricted turn.

South Main Crash

Motorist Nancy Cedor, 47, of 25 Moccasin Trail, who was driving a 2003 Nissan X-Terra sport-utility vehicle northward on South Main Street about 10 am June 22, stopped for a red traffic signal near 228 South Main Street, police said.

Northbound motorist Kevin Fraser, 22, of Southbury, who was driving a 2003 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck, then drove into the rear end of the Nissan, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Fraser an infraction ticket for following too closely.
