A Great Day For Roosters

To the Editor:

The Tercentennial Rooster Rally on Main Street gave the roosters and rooster lovers something to crow about. In keeping with their Chinese tradition, the sound and sight of our roosters brightened all of Newtown, and especially Main Street.

Especially outstanding was the sight of artist David Merrill with his paint splattered smock and big smile painting a golden rooster from start to finish that he magnanimously plans to offer to Newtown. The Town and Country Garden Club with their “talk-of-the-town” red, white, and blue eight-foot rooster was the most outstanding photo prop of the day. The wonderful Newtowners who brought their rooster collections to share with townspeople were a special hit. Many groups and organizations offered their incredible rooster items and memorabilia for sale including the RTC free collector’s rooster postcards. And the Rocking Roosters had all of Main Street rocking and rolling with their music and dancing.

The committee sincerely thanks all those attending and participating in the celebration to honor, enjoy, and showcase the rooster. Special thanks to Edmond Town Hall for all their assistance, the Newtown Police Department and to the residents along Main Street who were so gracious about sharing their front lawns and sidewalks with rooster lovers. Rumor has it that even the golden rooster on top the Meeting House steeple was smiling.

Sincere thanks,

Tom Catalina
