Joe Bowen, Scudder Baggett. Joey Devellis and Tucker Kass combined on a masterful one hitter, leading The Newtown Bee to a 9-1 win over Mitchell Architects in the semi-finals of the Babe Ruth Baseball 13 Prep Division playoffs.

With the win, The Bee has qualified for the championship game in the double-elimination playoffs and awaits its opponent.

In the win over Mitchell, Bowen added a pair of hits to spark the offense while George Martens, Scott Nichols, Brian Pennarola, and Joe Devellis banged out one hit apiece. In the field, outfielder Rob Harmonay and second baseman Michael Murphy made outstanding defensive plays.

For Mitchell, Jesse Furphy, Kevin Cahalane, Mike Barbour and Mike Chapin played well.

The Bee reached the semi-finals by virtue of a convincing 16-6 win over The Drug Center. In that game, Devellis was 3-for-3 with a double and two singles. Rob DeFilippe singled and doubled while Martens, Pennarola, Colin O’Connor and Bowen had one hit apiece.

In the field, third baseman John O’Brien, O’Connor and Bowen completed a successful run-down play to spark the defense. Bowen, Kass, Baggett and Pennarola combined on the hill for the win.

For Drug Center, Chris Reid, Alex Hennessey, David DeLaVega and Rob Simone all collected hits while Billy Spencer, Simone, Reid and Tommy Gaboriault shared time on the hill.

In other 13 Prep playoff action, Jurman Metrics reached the championship with a dramatic 15-14 win over Mitchell Architects.

Chris Gindraux, Croy Carlin, Jeff Peterson, Brian Shimko and Joe Rahtelli all had clutch hits as Jurman rallied in the seventh inning. Shimko, Rahtelli and Carlin all had multiple-hit games. On defense, Ricky Andrews led a pair of double plays with throws to home and third. It was a double-play throw to Cory Fletcher at third that ended the game.

Zach Kapple also played well.

For Mitchell, Kevin Cahalane went 4-for-5 at the plate while Mike Chapin, Mike Barbour, and Jeremy Mitchell had RBI hits. Nick Smith, Jesse Furphy and Tom Santella all had fine defensive performances.

Jurman reached the semi-finals with a 10-7 win over Berliner Insurance. Fletcher, Andrews, Shimko, and Peterson had multiple-hit games. Fletcher also made an outstanding play in centerfield while Drew Adamek, Jasper Ress and Shimko played well on defense.

Shimko pitched well, too, allowing just two runs. Carlin pitched a shutout inning.

For Berliner, Danny Murdoch, Sam Paproski and Tony Carlisle had solid hits while David Berliner made a spectacular diving catch at second base.

The championship set between The Newtown Bee and Jurman Metrics (Jurman would have to win twice to capture the title) is scheduled to start on Friday at Walnut Tree Hill field.
