âSEASCAPES: TRYON & SUGIMOTOâ TO OPEN AT SACKLER JULY 12
AVV 6-13 #742651
WASHINGTON, D.C. â The Arthur M. Sackler Gallery will present âSeascapes: Tryon & Sugimoto,â on view July 12âJanuary 25.
For the first time since the opening of the Freer Gallery of Art in 1923, works from the American collection will be shown with works from outside the museum.
A series of 22 pastels of the Maine coast, known collectively as âSea Moodsâ (1915â16), by American landscape painter Dwight Tryon (1849â1925) will be on view at the Sackler galleries, juxtaposed with six black and white photographs of the sea by contemporary Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto from his ongoing series âSeascapes.â
Although the works are separated by history and medium, they are linked by a common subject â the sea â and a concern with documenting the perceptual activity of the artist as well as a natural motif. The formal resonances between these two series will encourage quiet contemplation and allow viewers to discern aesthetic connections between the diverse artworks on view throughout the Freer and Sackler galleries.
The Arthur M. Sackler Gallery is at 1050 Independence Avenue, SW, on the National Mall. For more information, www.asia.si.edu or 202-633-1000.
