BOYS

Senior Gold

Guilford A 7, Newtown 3 – The Newtown Senior Gold boys came into the 2006 postseason as the 10th ranked team in the Connecticut-New York lacrosse league, riding speed and aggressiveness to 11 regular season wins against only three defeats and the opening round game with Guilford (ranked 11th) promised to be a quality tilt between two equally matched opponents. Newtown was able to muster enough gumption to play a close first half in which they never led, but the second half – in which they never scored – proved to be their undoing.

After a Guilford goal squeaked by Andrew Hyland in the game’s opening minute, Newtown settled down on offense and got on the board courtesy of Dylan Huebner, who took Ben Mahony’s pass and put a nifty bounce shot high into the upper right corner of the net.

The comfort of equality was short-lived, however, as Guilford used an impressive combination of power and skill on attack and at the midfield position to run the score to 3-1 at the end of the quarter.

The second stanza opened with a scramble in front of the Guilford net and Newtown midfielder Andrew Golankiewicz got one of his signature “garbage” goals … picking up the loose ball in front and dunking it back into the goal to bring Newtown within one.

Guilford scored another goal to make it 4-2, but when Mahony worked from behind to hit a cutting Kyle Vignone, the deficit at the half was just one. But Guilford added a third quarter goal to take a 5-2 lead and two unanswered goals in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead.

The Fairfield Prep-bound Hyland sparkled between the pipes, stopping 17 shots on the day.
