The AP reports 2,500 of our soldiers have been killed in this war. We know thousands more were horribly wounded, tens of thousands of Iraqis were killed and their country is in shambles. Much of this suffering came at the direction of al-Zarqawi. While a poet might make good use of the dramatic irony that by ignoring al-Zarqawi, the President wrought the failure of his Iraq policy, it brings me no pleasure to acknowledge this. Imagine instead what the world would be like today if instead of invading Iraq, the President stopped a known and deadly Al Qaeda terrorist.

Perhaps with al-Zarqawi gone, Iraq might begin to rebuild its nation in peace, but I fear that there is no shortage of despots to fill his shoes, and a profound shortage of wisdom and humanity in the leadership of our nation to make this happen.
