Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by the Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal*Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

This Week’s Programs

*This month’s CRAFT PROJECT is a painted/stamped TOTE BAG for the beach or for your knitting/quilting on Tuesday, June 27, 1 to 3 pm, in the art room.

*GOT YARN? We are looking for donations of yarn which can be dropped off any time at the Senior Center.

*ANNUAL PICNIC on Wednesday, June 28, 11 am to 3 pm, at Dickinson Park, rain or shine. Join us for lawn bocce, cards, live entertainment, good food, egg toss, water balloons, laughter and dancing. Cost is $5. Bring a chair. Hamburgers, hot dogs, and salad will be served. Please help by bringing a snack or a dessert to share. Call to sign up.

*If you have already signed up for all 4 classes, this week’s BALLROOM DANCE LESSONS will be Thursday, June 29, 4 to 5 pm.

*REMINDERS: *SWEET HART BUS — Call 748-2511 for reservations and 830-4399, their direct line, to go home so you don’t have to wait at doctor’s office.

*ETHEL KAUFMAN will  lead a CHORUS GROUP on Mondays at 1 pm.

*Pat Babbage teaches EXERCISE classes on Monday and Wednesday mornings.

*HATHA YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday mornings at 10. Try a class with Helen Herbold.

 *Lynn Flanders is teaching COUNTRY-WESTERN LINE DANCING Tuesday mornings from 10:30 until 11:30.

*QUILTING CLASS meets on Fridays at 10 am.

*Call the Senior Center or stop for information or reservations for the various trips that are being offered. Come to the center for overnight trip booklets.

OVERNIGHT TRIPS

*ALL ABOARD on the Belle of Brattleboro for a cruise of New England’s longest river. Leave the Senior Center at 7 am, on Friday, July 7, for Putney, Vt. The cost is $76.

*TRAVEL TO THE ISLANDS at Camp Conri Lodge in Ashford, Monday to Friday, July 24–28. For $190 per person enjoy three meals a day, physical, spiritual, and social activities, crafts, bible study, fishing, talent night, boating, and bingo.

*THREE-DAY TRIP, August 9–11. See the play Ruth, have an Amish dinner at Hershey Farm, a local tour of the chocolate capital Hershey, Penn., see The 2006 Summer Spectacular, visit the Choo Choo Barn, ride the Strasburg Railroad and more. The cost is $389 for double, $505, single, and $379, triple.

*MAINE RAIL & SAIL — From September 26 to 28 enjoy a boat cruise on Penobscot Bay, lunch at Schoolhouse Restaurant in Portland; dinner at Rockland Trade Winds, Lobster Capital of Maine; tour Maine Lighthouse Museum, Farnsworth Art Museum and Wyeth building, and after a buffet breakfast, board the Maine Eastern Railroad’s “Lobster Land Train” for a scenic train ride through Wiscasset, Bath and Brunswick. The cost is $349 for double, $459, single, and $339, triple (includes 2 breakfasts & 2 dinners, including 1 lobster choice dinner).

*Enjoy the excitement of LAS VEGAS, the thrill of casino gambling, and entertainment around the clock from Sunday, October 8 to Friday, October 13. Tour includes roundtrip airfare, accommodations for five nights at THE FLAMINGO HILTON, three free show admissions, two day trips, and other city discounts. Cost for 65 and older: $689 pp double and $869 single; and for under 64: $749 pp double and $934 single.

DAY TRIPS

*Travel to the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville on Tuesday, July 18, for a POLKA FEST. The cost is $58, and departure is 10 am. Enjoy a family style lunch of Polish food accompanied by the rousing music of Dick Pillar and his Polkabration Band.

*DATE CHANGES for Westchester Dinner Theater are Hot Mikado is changed from July 14 to September 14 and Full Monty is changed from September 14 to October 26

Meals are subject to change.

Sandwiches and Salads will be available on Fridays with three days notice.

Monday: June 26: Salisbury steak with gravy, mashed potato, peas & diced carrots, wheat dinner roll, cling peaches;

Tuesday: June 27: Boneless chicken cacciatore, egg noodles, green beans, soft breadstick, chocolate chip cookie;

Wednesday: Turkey a la king served over rice; tossed garden salad with tomato and French dressing, buttermilk biscuit, fruit cocktail;

Thursday: Spaghetti with meatball in marinara sauce; fresh sliced zucchini, parmesan cheese, Italian bread, orange juice, Italian ice;

Friday: Turkey wrap; marinated beet salad, macaroni salad, vanilla pudding with strawberry topping.

Also, for planning ahead—

Monday: July 3: July 4th Special: Footlong turkey hotdogs, footlong rolls, baked beans, coleslaw, mustard, watermelon;

Tuesday: 4th of July: CLOSED
