Sobriety Checkpoint Finds No Drunk Drivers

Police conducted a sobriety checkpoint on the night of Friday, June 15, and early morning hours of Saturday, June 16, in seeking out motorists who were intoxicated by alcohol and/or drugs while driving.

Police Sergeant John Cole, who supervised the enforcement project, said that police held the checkpoint at two locations — at Hawleyville Road near its intersection with Covered Bridge Road in Hawleyville, and also at Wasserman Way near its intersection with Trades Lane at Fairfield Hills.

Police made no arrests on charges of DUI during the enforcement project, he said. Police, however, did issue one infraction to a motorist for failure to wear a seat belt, and also issued multiple warnings to motorists for various automotive equipment problems, Sgt Cole said.

During such checkpoints, police stop all motorists driving in both directions to briefly interview them to learn whether those drivers under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Three-quarters of the police overtime costs for sobriety checkpoints is covered by state Department of Transportation highway safety grants.
