Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For information about programs offered, call 203-270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon, for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is $1 each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip. Call 203-748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*On Tuesday, June 26, visit Mohonk Mountain House, New Paltz, N.Y., the “unspoiled resort,” a Victorian-style castle sitting lakeside, with 2,000-plus wooded acres and views galore. Have lunch at the Grand Buffet; enjoy a concert, music acts vary from classical to contemporary, Broadway to Big Band; stroll through the award-winning gardens; and visit Mohonk Barn Museum, one of the largest barns in the Northeast, built in 1888. Cost is $96; departure TBA.

* No exercise classes on June 25 and 27.

 

Upcoming Programs

*The center will be closed on July 4.

*On the third Monday of every month, there will be a bake sale from 9 to 10 am. We are looking for donations of baked goods to be brought in before that time.

*“Helping Caregivers When a Loved One is Seriously Ill” is the Lunch and Learn Series topic for Friday, July 20, at noon. Learn how to help and support families, as well as their loved ones with the physical and emotional demands of care for the seriously ill. Lunch is provided; call to reserve.

*Upcoming events: “Harborfest,” view the tall ships in Boston on July 2 for $120; Lobster Feast at the Log Cabin on July 12 for $87; Mohegan Sun Casino trip on July 26 for $30; and a Westchester Broadway Theatre trip to see Can-Can on September 5 for $90.

Monday: 10 am, pinochle; noon, lunch; 1 pm, chorus/sing-along; 1:30 pm, art class. 2 pm yoga.

Tuesday: 10 am, Cards For Troops; 10 am, pinochle; 10:30, line dancing; noon, lunch; 2 pm, tai chi; 3 pm, chair yoga.

Wednesday: 10 am, bridge or pinochle; noon, lunch; 2:30 pm, Bridges.

Thursday: 10 am, board games or pinochle; 10:30 am Iris fold cards; noon, lunch; 1 pm, Scrabble, 1 pm, yoga.

Friday: 9 am, Zumba Gold and mah jongg; 10 am, pinochle; 10:30 am, quilting and exercise; noon, knit or crochet; 3 pm, chair yoga.

Other items available at any time are: Wii (bowling, tennis, baseball, golf), pool table, ping pong table, card table, and various board games.

 

Menu For Week Of

June 25–29

Monday: Oven-fried chicken quarter, macaroni and cheese, spinach, wheat bread, cinnamon applesauce.

Tuesday: Hot open roast beef sandwich on wheat with gravy, steak fries, fresh zucchini, apple juice, pie.

Wednesday: Pasta fagioli, chef salad plate with turkey, ham and cheese, cucumber, French dressing, pasta and vegetable salad, 4-inch grinder, sherbet.

Thursday: Happy Birthday: Sliced turkey with gravy, fresh sweet potato, mixed vegetables, oat bread, birthday cake.

And for planning ahead —

Monday, July 2: Ravioli and meatball with marinara sauce, parmesan cheese, Italian blend vegetables, Italian bread, fresh fruit.

Tuesday, July 3: Independence Day Special: Lemonade, beef BBQ ribs, baked beans, coleslaw, wheat dinner roll, strawberry shortcake.
