Hook, Line & Sinker—

Newtown Goes Fishing

By Steve Bonanno

Fishing is a truly timeless activity that has been used for generations, both for food and for relaxation and bonding; and, with summer here and Father’s Day approaching, it is the perfect time to join the ranks of the fishers.

“There are quite a few fishermen in Newtown,” said Skip Luf, fishing chairman for the Newtown Fish and Game Club.

The popularity of fishing in Newtown may have something to do with the numerous bodies of water in and around town filled with fish that are ripe for the catching. Lake Lillinonah, Lake Zoar, Candlewood Lake, and Hattertown Pond are just some of these locations. Taunton Lake is also a possible fishing location, but it is a private lake that requires membership in the Newtown Fish and Game Club.

Mr Luf said both Lakes Zoar and Lillinonah are excellent fishing locations. He also said that Lillinonah in particular is one of his favorite places in town to fish.

Some of the more common fish people might catch around here, said Mr Luf, are bass, trout, and sunfish.

“Sunfish are especially good for the young kids to catch,” said Mr Luf, “because they are a small fish.”

There is a minimum length requirement for “keepers,” according to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP). Trout must be at least 12 inches long, and both smallmouth and largemouth bass must be at least 15 inches long.

Newtown Fish and Game Club President Frank Hufner said to find all fishing regulations it is best to refer to the DEEP Angler’s Guide, which he refers to as “the fisherman’s bible.”

Getting a fishing license is also very important. According to the DEEP, an inland fishing license is required of anyone 16 years or older. Licenses are issued on a calendar year basis and expire every December 31. They are available at the town clerk’s office.

Once equipped with a license and the knowledge of regulations, a person is ready to go take advantage of the town’s numerous fishing locations. The best time to take advantage of these locations, according to Mr Luf, is early in the morning because the fish bite more.

Before casting your line into the water, though, you need to bait your hook. Mr Luf said worms make some of the best bait, “especially for kids fishing from the shore.”

A fisherman does not have to be limited to the shore though.

“Fishing from a boat is a great way to fish, “ said Mr Luf, “but if kids are on the boat, you need to be careful. It is better for more advanced fishermen.”

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned fisherman, now’s the time to get out there and cast your line, either alone, with a friend, or family member.
