Newtown needed some revenge against Joel Barlow on the lacrosse field and the Newtown Junior A and Senior Gold youth squads provided it by defeating Redding/Easton (RELax) for their respective inaugural South-West Conference championships.

The Senior Gold unit topped RELax Black, 8-2, as CJ Ryan scored three goals and Mike Zaccaro scored two goals and assisted on another. The Junior A unit slipped past RELax Black, 5-3, as seven different players either scored a goal or provided an assist.

In the Senior championship, a dominant first half of offensive and defensive firepower paved the way for the Gold to win the title at Blue & Gold Stadium. Colby Summerlin and Will Northrop each scored a goal and assisted on others as Lewis Thompson scored a goal and Ryan Korth had an assist. Brandon Body had 13 saves in goal, supported by rock solid close defense from Max Nacewicz, Josh Freitas, Sean Maher and Jeremy Schaniel.

Newtown took a 4-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and never looked back and started to put the pedal to the metal as Ryan scored back-to-back goals in the second quarter. After Thompson netted his goal, the locals had carved out a 7-0 lead.

The third quarter belonged to the defense and Body and RELax didn’t have a chance.

The Gold advanced to the championship game with a 12-1 win over Pomperaug Black in the quarterfinals and a 9-5 win over Stratford A in the semi-finals.

In the quarters, Thompson had a magnificent game with two goals and six assists. Zaccaro added four goals and an assist as Kyle Vignone had a goal and an assist and Justin Brophy – up from the Senior White team – added two goals.

Ryan, Sclafani and Korth also scored. Northrop played hard-nosed at attack, dishing out an assist and scooping five ground balls. Danny Hebert, a sixth grader playing with the eighth graders, added an assist and started several breaks out of the defensive end.

Jeremy Schaniel (long pole) and Thomas Murphy sparkled on defense.

In the semi-finals, Thompson dished out five assists, Northrop scored four goals and Body made 12 saves – including two at point-blank range – to lead the locals. Zaccaro scored two goals and had an assist, Korth scored two goals, Vignone scored a goal and Murphy had an assist.

Scott Wexler played heads-up at midfield while Schaniel and Freitas were brilliant on defense.

In the Junior championship at Treadwell Park, Parker Rodbell, Pat Capozziello, James Marusi, Tyler Hanley and Hebert all scored goals while Connor Quinn and Graham Derrickson provided the assists to fuel the offense.

After a scoreless first quarter – thanks to the defense of Tom Bauer, Jack Kearney, James Marusi and Brian Kruger – the locals finally broke the ice on Rodbell’s goal. Capozziello then went coast to coast and pumped the un assisted goal for a 2-0 lead.

RELax quickly answered with a goal on a man up play and half ended with Newtown on top, 2-1.

In the third, Hebert scored a quick goal with an assist from Derrickson to put the locals up, 3-1. RELax again answered with a goal, but then Hanley whipped a shot past the goalie to put Newtown up, 4-2, at the end of the third quarter.

RELax pulled to within one but as Hebert, Phil Reynolds, Jacob Newton-Tanzer and Alec Beauchemin were fighting for loose balls and goalie Evan Isaacs kept coming up with huge save after huge save, the final hammer came down on RELax with 4:02 left in the fourth when Marusi drove through three men to pump an unassisted goal home for the deciding 5-3 score.
