Mark Pizzi and Carol Lipnick captured the men’s and women’s singles championships at the recent Newtown Open Tennis Tournament.

The tournament is the first of two major tournaments staged by the Newtown Tennis Association. Dozens of competitors spent the last several weeks working their way through the early rounds in an effort to reach the championship weekend, June 9 and 10, at Dickinson Park.

A short rainstorm forced the tournament to briefly move indoors

The second-seeded Pizzi captured the title with a 6-2, 6-2 win over top-seeded Bob Elliott. Pizzi started off with a bye and then defeated David Primini and fourth-seeded Mariano Moran to earn a spot in the finals.

The top-seeded Lipnick also started off with a bye and then defeated Kate Coviello 6-1, 6-3 before stopping Lisa Donovan 6-2, 6-1 in the final round.

In other divisions –

Men’s Open Doubles: Gene Chappell and Mark Pizzi defeated Bob Elliott and Owen Robertson 6-1, 6-4. Men’s 40 Singles: Second-seeded Anthony Ditullio defeated Fabio Anello 6-2, 6-2 for the title as Dan Yee topped Bill Meier 6-2, 6-2 in the consolation final. DiTullio had to overcome Elmer Adams and Tim Hanley to reach the final. Men’s 40 Doubles: Don Farrell and Don Kanneburg defeated top-seeded Takeo Inouye and Mariano Moran in a grueling 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 (3) final. Men’s 55 Singles: Second-seeded Tim Snyder defeated top-seeded Elmer Adams 6-1, 6-1. Snyder reached the championship round with wins over Bob Delfay and Rod Taylor. Men’s 55 Doubles: Top-seeded Keith Butterfield and Rod Taylor defeated Dom Nocturne and Tim Snyder 7-6 (1), 6-3. Mixed Doubles: Second-seeded Shirley Berliner and Pierre Moudourou defeated top-seeded Dave Chandelaine and Carol Lipnick 6-0, 6-2.
