Vassallo, Sr

World War II Veteran

George A. Vassallo, Sr, 88, of Norwalk, husband of Santa Pelletteri Vassallo, died June 15 in Norwalk Hospital. Mr Vassallo was born in Astoria, Queens, N.Y. on August 21, 1918, son of Vincent and Mamie Giberti Vassallo, and had resided in Norwalk most of his life.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Pamela A. Simso and her husband, David W., of Newtown, Marie A. Calka and her husband, Thomas W., of Norwalk; and Deborah A. Vertucci of New Canaan; a sister, Viola Marino of Long Island, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews. A son, George A. Vassallo, Jr, a brother, Ralph Vassallo, and a sister, Ann d’Este, predeceased him.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the US Army Air Corps in North Africa. He was a car salesman for various car dealers and former co-owner of Shorehaven Dodge. After his retirement, he worked for his son, George, Jr, at Al’s Warehouse. Mr Vassallo first was employed by The Hat Corporation of America, was a former auxiliary policeman, and a bartender at Shorehaven Golf Club for many years. He enjoyed gardening, painting, drawing, and he also made maps while in the service.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 21 in St Thomas the Apostle Church, Norwalk. Interment was in St John Cemetery, Norwalk.
