Simple Trespassing

Police said that based on a neighbor’s complaint, they lodged a charge of simple trespassing against Danielle Justus, 30, of 6 Washbrook Road about 6:30 pm June 19.

Police said the complaint concerns the use of a driveway. Justus is scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court July 6 to answer the charge.

Storm Drain

Police said motorist Deborah M. Hoffman, 46, of 4 Antler Pine Road, Sandy Hook, was driving a 2001 Dodge Caravan minivan southbound on Walnut Tree Hill Road near Evergreen Road about 4:50 pm June 20, when the minivan’s right front and rear tires struck a storm drain, which was raised above the road’s surface in connection with a construction project.

No construction signs were posted in the area, police said. Hoffman was not injured. No enforcement action was taken. The minivan was towed away for repairs, police said.

Country Club Road

Police said motorist Matthew McQuail, 47, of 25 Queen Street was driving a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero sport-utility vehicle eastbound on Country Club Road about 8 pm June 19 before he turned right onto South Main Street and entered the “left turn only” lane for Mile Hill Road.

In making the right turn into that turning lane, the Mitsubishi struck a southbound 1984 Chevrolet Camaro driven by Reinaldo Cardona, 37, of Waterbury, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued McQuail a written warning for failure to grant the right of way at a stop sign.

  

Cell Phones

State police report they received several cellular telephone calls about 11 pm June 17 reporting what appeared to be a drunken motorist driving a 1979 Oldsmobile on eastbound Interstate 84 near the Exit 11 off-ramp.

State police said they went to that area and stopped driver Christian P. Grele, 44, of Waterbury. After investigating, state police charged Grele with driving under the influence and failure to drive in the established lane. Grele was scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court June 25.

Subaru Vs Nissan

State police report a two-car accident on westbound Interstate 84, west of Exit 10, about 10:45 am June 20.

The accident involved a 1999 Subaru Forester driven by Gerilyn K. Smith, 58, of North Andover, Mass., and a 1995 Nissan Altima driven by Heather Lucas, 33, of Waterbury, according to state police. The collision occurred during a period of heavy stop-and-go traffic. There were no injuries.

Guardrail

During a period of heavy rain with slippery road conditions about 6 am June 17, motorist Richard L. Tibbals, 52, of Harwinton, who was driving a 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo on westbound Interstate 84, east of Exit 11, collided with guardrailing, state police said.

Collision

State police report that motorist Barbara H. Miller, 67, of Midlothian, Virginia, who was driving a 1999 GMC Yukon sport-utility vehicle on westbound Interstate 84 west of Exit 13, struck a guardrail about 4:15 pm June 17.

Toyota Vs Mercedes

State police report a two-car accident about 4 pm June 17 on westbound Interstate 84. The crash involved a 1992 Toyota sedan driven by David Rod, 17, of 36 Brookwood Drive and a 1987 Mercedes-Benz sedan driven by William Matelsko, 18, of Manorville, N.Y., according to state police.

Highway Crash

Motorist Megan K. Messenger, 23, of Silver Spring, Maryland, was driving a 1996 Jeep Cherokee eastbound on Interstate 84 near Exit 9 about 4:30 pm June 15 in heavy traffic when the Jeep stopped for the traffic and was struck from behind by a vehicle driven by Victor Siniscalchi, 55, of Newburgh, N.Y., state police said. There were no injuries. State police charged Siniscalchi with three motor vehicle violations.

DUI Warrant

Police said they charged Ryan Doheny, 20, of 73 Toddy Hill Road on a warrant June 24, lodging a count of  driving under the influence in connection with an April 26 one-car accident.

Newtown police said Doheny had been in the custody of Hartford police, who had charged him in connection with an unrelated matter, before they turned him over to Newtown police who served their warrant against him.

Doheny was driving a 1992 Ford Escort westbound on Sugarloaf Road about 3 am April 26 when the Ford went off the right side of the road and struck rocks and a tree and caught fire, police have said. Doheny got out of the auto before it became fully engulfed in flames, police have said. Sandy Hook and Newtown Hook and Ladder firefighters went to the accident scene to put out the blaze. The auto was a total loss. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Doheny to Danbury Hospital for treatment of arm and leg burns.

Doheny is scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court July 12 to answer the driving under the influence charge.

Warrant

Police report that Nathaniel Greenfield, 20, of 29 Parmalee Hill Road turned himself over to police June 22 after learning they had a warrant for his rearrest on charges on second-degree failure to appear in court, driving under the influence, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The warrant stems from Greenfield’s March 17 arrest by police. After a court appearance June 22, a judge released Greenfield on bond for a July 5 court appearance on the various charges.

DUI Charge

Police said they saw motorist Robert M. Laneuville, 38, of 39 Swamp Road making a U-turn at the intersection of Church Hill Road and Washington Avenue when the traffic signal there was red about 10:15 pm June 22. Police said Laneuville then crossed the double yellow lines while driving on Church Hill Road. Police said they stopped him and gave him sobriety tests which he failed.

Police charged Laneuville with driving under the influence, failure to obey a traffic control signal, and failure to drive to the right on a hill.

After processing, police released Laneuville for a July 10 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

 

Bank Damaged

Police report damage to First Union Bank’s glass-and-metal doors, which lead to the bank’s automatic teller machine vestibule at 7 Queen Street.

When found, the doors were stuck in a closed position. It appears that someone had tried to force open the doors to use the teller machine, police said.

The vandalism occurred sometime between 6:30 and 8 am on June 14, police said. The damage is estimated at $87.

 

Conspiracy

Police report that after being notified June 24 of a warrant for her arrest, police charged Teresa Dahlmeyer, 17, of 15 Sunnyview Terrace at the police station with conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny in connection with the theft of narcotics on May 29. Police released Dahlmeyer on a promise to appear July 10 in Danbury Superior Court.

I-84 Charge

State police said they stopped motorist James F. Gilchrist, 35, of Derby on June 23 for a motor vehicle violation on westbound Interstate 84, west of Exit 10, and learned he was driving with a suspended license.

State police charged Gilchrist with operating a motor vehicle while under suspension. Gilchrist was released on bond for a July 9 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Guardrail Hit

State police said motorist Charles T. Zelent, 19, was driving a 1984 Dodge in the left lane of two lanes on westbound Interstate 84 about 500 feet east of Exit 10 about 8:15 am June 25, when he slowed down due to traffic conditions, but struck a metal guardrail along the left road shoulder. Zelent was not injured in the crash, state police said.

Car Vs Truck

State police report an accident between a 1995 Dodge sedan and a tractor-trailer truck on eastbound Interstate 84 near Exit 9 about 8:45 pm June 24.

Police said motorist Dana L. Philipps, 23, of Bristol, who was driving the auto, was in the center lane of three lanes when trucker Donald R. Toth, 41, of Georgetown, Illinois, changed lanes from the left lane and struck the auto, heavily damaging it.

Philipps was transported to Danbury Hospital, treated for minor head injuries and released, state police said.

State police said Toth made an unsafe lane change.

 

Rear-Ender

State police report motorist Stanley Sholtes, 42, of Brookfield, was driving a 1991 Honda Accord eastbound on Interstate 84 near Exit 11 about 6 pm June 22 when he slowed due to stop-and-go traffic and was struck from behind by motorist Pichardo Sachenka, 25, of Midland Park, N.J., who was driving a 2000 Mercury coupe. There were no injuries. State police said Sachenka was traveling too fast and following too closely.

Hyundai Damaged

Police said that on June 15 someone damaged a white Hyundai sedan, which was parked in front of a Great Hill Road residence. The auto received front windshield and passenger side damage, police said.

Police ask anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

Bicycle Theft

Police report the theft of a bicycle from a Brushy Hill Road home on June 3 or 4. Police described the bicycle as an orange 24-speed Mongoose mountain bike with black shock absorbers on the front wheel. The model DX5-3 bicycle has a gelatin-filled seat and aluminum pedals. Anyone with information about the theft is asked to contact police.

   

Paint Vandalism

Police report that sometime between the afternoon of June 22 and 9 pm on June 26, someone broke into a storage container in the backfield area at Newtown High School and opened up approximately 50 gallons of paint, scattering the paint around the surrounding area.

A damage estimate was not available. Police are investigating the case of criminal mischief and ask anyone with information about the matter to contact them.

Construction Vandalism

Police report that someone sometime between 1:30 pm June 21 and 1 pm June 22 vandalized a payloader-style excavation machine at the new Butternut Ridge residential subdivision now under construction off Butterfield Road. The vandal broke two windows and a headlamp on the excavator. Police ask anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact them.

Fire Damage

Police said they received two reports of fire vandalism stemming from Sandy Hook incidents on the night of June 26.

Someone set fire to a garbage can on Cobblers Mill Road, off Jeremiah Road. Someone set fire to a mailbox in Beckett Village, off Bennetts Bridge Road.

Police ask anyone with information about the fires to contact them.

DUI Charge

Police said that when motorist Jeffrey F. Schmeltz, 48, of Ridgefield, who was driving a 1988 Ford Festiva, was attempting to leave a parking space at the Meadowbrook Terrace Mobile Home Park at 55 Sugar Street about 10 pm June 26, the Ford hit a parked Saturn.

Police said they received a report that the Ford’s driver might be intoxicated.

Police said they located the Ford at a nearby gas station on Route 302 and charged Schmeltz with driving under the influence and evading responsibility.

After processing, police released Schmeltz for a July 10 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Nine Charges

Police said they arrested Robert Corcoran, 36, of Westwood, N.J., on warrants listing nine charges about 10 am June 27 at Danbury Superior Court. Those charges stem from incidents which occurred in late 2000 and early 2001.

Police charged Corcoran with driving under the influence, threatening, third-degree criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, second-degree failure to appear in court, and four counts of violation of a protective order.

A  judge arraigned Corcoran on the charges at court, police said.

MV Charge

Police said they charged Daniel M. Moran, 51, of 10 Greenbriar Lane on June 26 with one count of operating a motor vehicle while under suspension. Police released Moran on a promise to appear in court July 10.

Credit Card

Police report they charged Nicholas Feola, 18, of 40 Algonquin Trail on June 27 on a warrant listing one count of illegal use of credit card in connection with a May 22 incident. Police released Feola for a July 12 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.
