Summer Reading Program
According to the American Library Association (ALA), students participating in a summer reading program are more likely to read at a higher grade level than their nonparticipating peers. To encourage children to read this summer, McDonaldâs New York Tri-State restaurants are launching the fourth annual McDonaldâs âCheck It Outâ Summer Reading Program, which offers students the chance to receive a free Happy Meal for reading during the summer.
âThe McDonaldâs Check It Out Summer Reading program is designed to encourage more students to read during the summer,â said Michael Giunta, president of the McDonaldâs New York Tri-State Owner/Operators Association. âThe McDonaldâs Check It Out booklet offers educational and fun activities that students can enjoy at their local library and home.â
The booklet also includes information from the American Library Association (ALA) on how families can help their children become better readers.
Students in grades K-4 can participate. Students can receive their free Happy Meal at participating McDonaldâs restaurants by asking their parent or librarian to help them fill in the McDonaldâs Check It Out Scorecard coupon with the names of the five books they have read. To redeem the coupon, an adult must accompany students, when bringing in the signed Scorecard to participating local McDonaldâs from June 30 through September 30.
To request a booklet, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to: McDonaldâs Check It Out Summer Reading Program c/o MWW; One Meadowlands Plaza, 6th floor East Rutherford, NJ 07073. Limit two booklets per household.
