Doctor To Discuss

Dietary Supplements

TRUMBULL — Dr Steven Fisher of Monroe will discuss the medicinal value, and limitations, of dietary supplements such as soy, Echinacea, and saw palmetto during a free Bridgeport Hospital Women’s Wellness Program, July 10, at the Trumbull Marriott.

To register, call 384-4444 or out-of-area 888-357-2396.

“As Hippocrates said in the 5th Century BC, ‘Let food be your medicine, and medicine be your food.’” Dr Fisher says. “It’s still true today, maybe more than ever.”

While admitting that dietary supplements can play an important role in keeping people healthy, Dr Fisher cautions that it would be a mistake to simply replace prescription medicine with a natural alternative.

“While they may have fewer potential side effects, relying solely on supplements –– even natural supplements –– is perpetuating a magic pill approach,” he says. “While supplements can be helpful, eating right, exercising, and finding ways to deal with stress are still the magic tricks that will go the longest way toward maintaining health.”
