Rear-Ender

Motorist James Marino, 42, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2018 Kia Optima sedan eastward near 31 Berkshire Road at about 2:26 pm on June 18, was preparing to make a turn into a driveway, when the Kia was struck from behind by motorist Carlos Lastra, 52, of Hamden, who was driving a 1995 Honda Accord sedan, police said.

There were no injuries. Police gave Lastra a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Fugitive From Justice

Court documents provided to The Newtown Bee on November 4, 2019 indicate that the charges of Extradition Arrest No Warrant and Use/Possession of Drug paraphernalia/less than 1/2 oz marijuana were nollied at Danbury Superior Court on June 18, 2018.

Police report that while on patrol about 5:23 pm on June 17, they checked the registration of a passing vehicle and learned that its owner was wanted by police in Maryland.

Police said that they then came into contact with the driver of that vehicle, Trevor Hickman Westfall, 23, of New Milford, in a commercial parking lot on South Main Street. After investigating, they charged Westfall with possession of marijuana paraphernalia.

Because he is wanted by Maryland police on multiple felony drug sales charges, Newtown police held Westfall as a fugitive from justice. Westfall was held on $250,000 bail in the Newtown police station lockup for an appearance on June 18 in Connecticut Superior Court in Danbury regarding extradition to Maryland.

At his June 18 court appearance, Westfall did not plead to the charges. He was released on $25,000 bail for a July 16 court appearance.

Chain Reaction

State police report a three-vehicle chain-reaction accident about 3:17 pm on June 16 on westbound Interstate 84, near Exit 10.

A 2019 Volkswagen Jetta sedan driven by Kendy Pierre, 26, of West Orange, N.J., which was carrying three passengers, slowed for traffic conditions, after which a 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan SUV driven by Patrick Ryan, 20, of Ridgefield, then slowed behind the Jetta. A 2014 Nissan versa driven by Elizabeth Reale, 52, of Thomaston then struck the Tiguan, pushing it into the rear end of the Jetta, state police said.

Pierre, the three passengers in the Jetta, and Reale all were transported by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Danbury Hospital to be treated for minor injuries. Reale received an infraction for following too closely.

SUV Vs Sedan

Police report that about 1:40 pm on June 15, motorist Craig Brodie, 77, of Hudsonville, Mich., who was driving a 2017 Ford Escape SUV, was attempting to exit a gas station at 47 Church Hill Road to make a left turn onto eastbound Church Hill Road, when the Ford struck an eastbound 2019 BMW 750 sedan driven by Alyanna Camacho, 25, of Long Island City, N.Y.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Brodie for failure to grant the right of way.

Interstate Accident

State police said that at about 7:30 am on June 14, on westbound Interstate 84, about 500 feet east of Exit 9, motorist Jocelyn Mitchell, 46, of Lowell, Mass., who was driving a 2019 Chevrolet Traverse SUV, slowed for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by motorist Robert Puckett, 72, of Kettering, Ohio, who was driving a 2010 Toyota vehicle.

There were no injuries. State police verbally warned Puckett for following too closely.

Intersection Collision

At about 8:31 am on June 14, motorist Jordan Joseph, 86, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 2018 Hyundai Sonata sedan eastward on Hanover Road, came to a stop at a stop sign at Hanover Road’s intersection with Boulevard Extension and Anthony Ridge Road, police said.

At that time, motorist Dean Harrell, 48, of Sandy Hook was driving a 2001 Mitsubishi Fuso truck, which was towing a trailer northward on Boulevard Extension. The Hyundai then attempted to cross the intersection to reach Anthony Ridge Road but collided with the trailer.

There were no injuries. Joseph received a written warning for failure to grant the right of way at a stop sign.

BMW Vs Kenworth

About 4:21 pm on June 14, motorist Mikhail Vainshtein, 72, of Newton, Mass., who was driving a 2014 BMW 4-Series auto, attempted to change travel lanes on westbound Interstate 84, near Exit 11, but struck a 2007 Kenworth T-800 heavy truck driven by James Woodward, 66, of New Hartford, state police said.

There were no injuries. State police verbally warned Vainshtein for making an improper lane change.

Rear-Ender

State police report that at about 6:56 pm on June 14, on eastbound Interstate 84, west of Exit 11, motorist Justin Lampley, 26, of Monroe, who was driving a 2003 Toyota Camry sedan, struck the rear end of a 2011 Honda Civic driven by Matthew Benger, 48, of Danbury.

There were no injuries. Lampley received an infraction for following too closely.

Two Charges

Police report that they stopped motorist Alan Hodge, 38, of New Hartford for an investigation near the intersection of Wasserman Way and Nunnawauk Road at about 6:07 pm on June 14.

Police said they charged Hodge with driving with a suspended license and with possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana. Police learned that state police held a warrant for Hodge’s arrest.

Newtown police released Hodge for a June 27 court appearance on the two local charges, after which they turned Hodge over to state police.

Acura Vs Audi

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of South Main Street and Country Club Road about 6:29 pm on June 14.

The collision involved a 2004 Acura RSX SUV driven by Vincenza McNulty, 66, of Sandy Hook, and a 2008 Audi A-4 sedan driven by Matthew Bouton, 22, of Sandy Hook, according to police. Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported McNulty to Danbury Hospital. Newtown Hook & Ladder also responded to the accident.

Breach Of Peace

Police said that on June 14, they responded to a report of a dispute at a mobile home park at 301 South Main Street in Botsford.

The complaint involved a person who was banging on a vehicle’s window and shouting profanities at a neighbor.

After investigating, police charged Joseph Sparaco, 47, of Newtown, with second-degree breach of peace. Sparaco was released on a written promise to appear in court on June 25.

Ford Hits BMW

Amid rainy conditions and in heavy traffic, motorist Nancy Burton, 69, of Redding, who was driving a 2005 Ford F-250 pickup truck on westbound Interstate 84, near Exit 10, about 8:38 am on June 13, struck the rear end of a 2008 BMW 128-I auto driven by Christine Wells, 50, of Woodbury, state police said.

There were no injuries. Burton received a written warning for following too closely.

Lincoln Vs Tree

Motorist Richard Wolffer, 83, of Woodbury, who was driving a 1997 Lincoln Town Car sedan northward on Swamp Road about 3:36 pm on June 13, swerved off the right side of the street and struck a tree, police said.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Wolffer for failure to drive in the proper lane and for driving an unregistered vehicle.

Hawleyville Collision

Police report a two-vehicle collision about 2:56 pm on June 12 on Hawleyville Road at its intersection with the Exit 9 on-ramp for eastbound Interstate 84.

Motorist Nery Barrera, 34, of Danbury was driving a 2004 GMC Sierra pickup truck southward on Hawleyville Road and was attempting to make a left turn to enter the on-ramp, as motorist Christine Weisberg, 56, of Ridgefield, was driving a 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-400 sedan northward on Hawleyville Road.

The two vehicles collided. There were no injuries. Police issued Barrera an infraction for failure to drive to the right and for driving without a license.

BMW Vs Jeep

About 7:36 am on June 12, motorist Robert Kick, Jr, 47, of Newtown was driving a 2018 Jeep Wrangler SUV on Washington Avenue, police said. At that time, motorist Roni Bajraliu, 16, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2007 BMW 328-XI sedan westward on Pearl Street, stopped at a stop sign at Pearl Street’s intersection with Washington Avenue, police report. The BMW then attempted to enter Washington Avenue but collided with the Jeep.

There were no injuries. Bajraliu was verbally warned for failure to grant the right of way.

Ambulance staffers checked DiCarlo at the scene. Newtown Hook & Ladder volunteer firefighters were also dispatched to the incident. Both vehicles were towed due to extensive damage.
