Sunday At Edmond Town Hall: Special 30th Anniversary Screenings Of 'Princess Bride' Scheduled
Special 30th anniversary screenings of The Princess Bride, sponsored by Nerd Night in Newtown, will be offered on Sunday, June 25, at 4 and 7 pm, at Edmond Town Hall Theater, 45 Main Street in Newtown.
Tickets are $3, and the matinee will be subtitled for the benefit of the hearing impaired. A free popcorn will be bestowed to each ticket holder, courtesy of the "Popcorn Fairies."
This film's star-powered ensemble cast includes Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, André the Giant, Chris Sarandon, and Christopher Guest, as well as hilarious appearances by Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, and Wallace Shaun, along with Peter Falk and a young Fred Savage.
With so many memorable lines in this film, it is difficult to pick a favorite scene. Is it the battle of wits between Vezzini (Shaun) and the Man in Black (Elwes), or the sword fight scene between Inigo Montoya (Patinkin) and the Man in Black, or Buttercup (Wright) and Wesley's (Elwes) attempted escape through the dreaded Fire Swamp?
Even the most villainous characters are enjoyable because they are so congenial. When the six-fingered Count Rugen (Guest) asks Prince Humperdinck, "Are you coming down into the pit? Westley's got his strength back. I'm starting him on the machine tonight," the prince replies, "Tyrone, you know how much I love watching you work, but I've got my country's 500th anniversary to plan, my wedding to arrange, my wife to murder and Guilder to frame for it; I'm swamped."
Someday Cinema Series Coordinator Jen Rogers says Rob Reiner created a masterpiece when he directed the 1987 film based on William Goldman's book.
"Those too young to never have seen it in a theater should not miss this opportunity," said Ms Rogers. The epic story has elements of comedy, adventure, romance, and fairy tale, she points out.
The series, presented by Newtown Cultural Arts Commission, will resume in the fall with Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) on September 24, Hitchcock's VertigoÃÂ (1958) and Mel Brooks' High Anxiety (1977) on October 29, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987) on November 12, and It's a Wonderful Life (1946) on December 17.
