Snapshot: Catherine Larson
Occupation: I was a teacher in Trumbull schools for 35 years, and was the IT leader for ten years. I retired, but I still teach tech privately through my own company, Tech Training. I’m also a Google-certified teacher. Recently, I’ve been doing training on the Google apps with a bunch of schools, and I still work with the Trumbull school system. I’m also music director and organist at St Elizabeth Seton in Ridgefield.
Family: My husband is Eric, and we’ve been married 40 years this July. We have three boys, Patrick, David, and John, all married. Our youngest, John, is a submariner with the Navy, currently deployed since Easter. We have three grandsons, A.J., Micah, and Christopher.
Pets: We had dogs, we had gerbils, we had hamsters when the boys were growing up. We love animals, but have no pets right now.
How long have you lived here? We have lived in Sandy Hook for ten years.
What do you like to do in your free time? I do enjoy knitting. We have gardens, so this time of year a lot of time is spent pruning and weeding. I like reading, and I like spending time with my grandchildren and husband.
Do you have a favorite book? I like John Grisham’s books. Mostly I read mysteries and suspense-type books.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? We go to Arizona about every three years. We like Sedona, and hiking on the red rocks. We’ve driven to the Grand Canyon a couple of times. That’s impressive.
What is the best thing about Newtown? I love the community and the small town feeling. It’s a friendly place to live.
Who has been the greatest influence in your life? Probably my mother. She was a very upbeat person and always saw the good in people. I learned how to care for people and listen. She was a go-getter, and didn’t let things get in her way. If something went wrong, she found the humor in it.
Did you have a favorite toy, growing up? Anything horses. I collected ceramic horses, stuffed animals, and I even had a marionette horse.
Do you have a guilty pleasure? I call it “decompressing.” Whether it is solitaire or Candy Crush, I like to spend some time doing something totally mindless on the iPad or computer.
