SCAN Puts A Wrap On Its 2008 Spring Show

The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN), Inc. recently presented its 39th Annual Spring Juried Art Show. This is the annual event presented in the lower meeting room of C.H. Booth Library and this year visitors were treated to a presentation of 145 works.
Original works by artists from the western Connecticut region were be selected by three distinguished jurors: Tom Brenner of Silvermine School of Art and Housatonic Community College, Edward DeVoe of Washington Art Association, and Barbara Grossman of Yale University. The trioâs selections resulted in a presentation of oils, watercolors, pastels, acrylics, mixed media works, graphics, sculpture and at least one print.
The show, which was chaired this year by Andrea Zimmermann, opened quietly on Saturday, June 7, but celebrated its formal opening with a reception and awards reception the following afternoon. During that reception it was announced that Paula Reneeâs âRed Trees Lakeside III,â a hand stitched work done with hand dyed silk, had been selected for The Larry Newquist Award for Excellence/Best in Show honors.
A full listing of this yearâs awards follows. The show remained on view in the Olga Knoepke Memorial Meeting Room through Sunday, June 15.

*Society of Creative Arts of Newtown Awards, $100 each: Paul Rawson, âAquila,â watercolor; Eileen Foster, âFayerweather Light,â watercolor; Ruth Newquist, âSoHo Activity,â watercolor; and Charlene Thomas, âColorado Timiberline,â pastel.
