HARTFORD â On Wednesday, June 25, State Representatives DebraLee Hovey (R-Monroe, Newtown) and Julia Wasserman, (R-Newtown) will co-host a ceremony presenting the new Connecticut War Times Service Medal to local veterans at Newtown High School. Registration for the event begins at 8:30 am and the ceremony will begin at 9 am.
Approximately 150 Newtown veterans are expected to receive the honor, including Rep Wasserman.
To be eligible for the honor, a veteran must have served in time of war, as defined in state statues, and who either was a resident of Connecticut at the time he or she was called to active duty for such service, or is domiciled in this state on the date of such award.
This year, Reps Hovey and Wasserman mailed letters throughout Newtown informing veterans of the medal. Medals will be mailed to veterans who submitted an approved application to the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs, but do not wish to attend the June 25 celebration.
Scheduled attendees include State Veterans Affairs Commissioner Linda Schwartz and local officials.
