Margaret Meyers

Devoted To Family And Community

Margaret Meyers, 69, resident of Fairfield for more than 35 years, died June 15 in her home surrounded by her loving family. Mrs Meyers fought with dignity a long battle with a rare brain disease, corticobasal degeneration. Born January 16, 1939, in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth (Mulvaney) Criswell.

Mrs Meyers is survived by her husband, Tom Meyers; and children, Bob Meyers and wife, Bek, of Newtown, Tom Meyers and wife, Carol, of Sudbury, Mass., Marianne Meyers Frasco and husband, David, of Fairfield, Susan Meyers Wenzel and husband, Tom, of Sarasota, Fla., and Jim Meyers and wife, Sharon, of Fairfield. She is remembered by nine loving grandchildren, Brian Meyers, Sarah Frasco, Bridget Meyers, Michael Frasco, John Meyers, Lindsey Meyers, Matthew Meyers, Christopher Meyers, and Jeffrey Meyers. Mrs Meyers was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Richard Criswell of Cincinnati, Ohio.

She married her high school sweetheart, Thomas Meyers, on August 22, 1959. Mr Meyers gave her the nickname “Marge.” She graduated from Our Lady of Cincinnati College in Cincinnati, Ohio, with a teaching certificate. After they were married, Mrs Meyers moved to South Bend, Ind., to be with her husband in his senior year at the University of Notre Dame.

She taught at St Joseph’s Elementary School in South Bend before giving birth to twins after Mr Meyers graduated. They had three other children while living in Cincinnati, Schenectady, N.Y., Stratford, and Fairfield.

Mrs Meyers was an active member of St Anthony of Padua Church in Fairfield where she attended Mass regularly. She was a Eucharistic Minister at St Thomas Aquinas Church and an active member of St Thomas Aquinas School PTA and St Thomas Aquinas Women’s Guild where her five children attended elementary school. Mrs Meyers was a loyal supporter of Fairfield University, Fairfield Prep, Notre Dame High School of Fairfield, and Lauralton Hall of Milford, where her children attended school. Mrs Meyers was an avid fan of the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The Notre Dame Victory march was played at her funeral.

She was devoted to the Blessed Mother and the rosary. Mrs Meyers was a ten-year retreat participant at the Holy Family Retreat Center in West Hartford.

She was a volunteer at St Vincent’s Medical Center for more than 20 years and was honored with the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2002. She was a member of Black Rock Yacht Club, Gaelic American Club, and St Vincent’s Women’s Auxiliary. She had many friends in the Fairfield community who visited with her during her final days.

Services were held June 18 in St Anthony of Padua Church, Fairfield. Interment followed at Oak Lawn Cemetery.
