Route 34 Crash

Motorist John Hornack, 53, of Great Quarter Road, who was driving a 1999 Ford Windstar westward on Route 34 near Chestnut Hill Road, was following a slow line of traffic at about 4 pm June 10, when the Ford was struck from behind by a 1990 Toyota Corolla DLX station wagon driven by Noc Souvanna, 48, of Danbury, police said.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps went to the accident to check Hornack for minor neck pain, police said.

Police issued Souvanna a written warning for following too closely.

 

Telephone Found

At about 9:15 pm June 11, a person turned over to police a black cordless telephone handset, which was found in the rear parking lot at the lower level of Town Hall South at 3 Main Street. The owner may claim the item at the police station, which is on the upper level of Town Hall South.

VW Vs Dodge

Southbound motorist Dillinia Briglia, 70, of 77 Hanover Road, who was driving a 1987 Dodge D-250 pickup truck southward on Queen Street at about 4:30 pm June 11, attempted to make a right turn into the northern entrance of Newtown Shopping Village, police said.

At that time, a southbound 2001 Volkswagen Jetta, driven by Kathleen Maloney, 19, of 2 Autumn Ridge Road, attempted to pass the Dodge on the right and also turn right into the shopping center driveway, resulting in the Volkswagen striking the Dodge, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Maloney a written warning for passing on the right.

Nail Theft

Sometime between 5:30 pm on June 6 and 7 am on June 9, someone stole approximately $2,000 worth of large nails from a construction site at 178 Mt Pleasant Road in Hawleyville.

Sometime during the first week of June, someone stole 300 gallons of diesel fuel from that construction site.

Ginsburg Development Corporation, Connecticut, LLC, is building the 92-unit condominium complex known as Liberty at Newtown at the property. Police ask anyone with information about the thefts to contact them at 426-5841.

Mitsubishi Hits Pole

Motorist James Monroe, 22, of 12 Parmalee Hill Road was driving a 1994 Mitsubishi Galant eastward on Currituck Road about 4 pm June 7, when while traveling near 33 Currituck Road, he spotted a dog crossing the street, police said. Monroe swerved to avoid hitting the dog, but in doing so he drove into a utility pole, police said.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps checked Monroe at the accident scene for knee and head injuries, police said.

Main Street Collision

Northbound motorist Robert Myers, 43, of 10 Mt Pleasant Road was driving a 2001 Hyundai Sonata on Main Street near Edmond Town Hall about 2 pm June 14, when he slowed for traffic, police said.

Northbound motorist Jarrod Lively, 17, of 1 Phyllis Lane, who was driving a 1992 Dodge Dakota D-250 pickup truck, then struck the Hyundai from behind, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Lively a written warning for following too closely.

Gray’s Plain Accident

Police report an accident involving an automobile and a tractor-trailer truck hauling a wide load on Gray’s Plain Road in Sandy Hook about 8 am June 13.

Trucker Thomas Gates, 46, of Naugatuck was driving a 2001 Peterbilt tractor, which was hauling a wide load, that attempted to move to the right when a 1994 Honda Civic, driven by Sara Daniels, 20, of 45 Bennetts Bridge Road, approached from the opposite direction, police said.

The two vehicles, however, collided, police said. There were no injuries. 

Police said Gates had a permit to haul a wide load, but the load was wider than the permit allowed. Police issued Gates an infraction ticket for driving with an overly wide load.

Route 34 Accident

Police report a two-vehicle accident on Route 34 about 3 pm June 10. Eastbound motorist Jen Lazich, 29, of Branford, who was driving a 2003 Pontiac Vibe sport-utility vehicle, stopped for a westbound school bus, which had its red flashers on and its warning signs extended, police said.

At that time, eastbound motorist Emory Check, 66, of 19 Paugussett Road, who was driving a 1994 Ford Ranger pickup truck, saw that the Pontiac had stopped for the bus, so Check applied the Ford’s brakes, but struck the Pontiac from behind, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Check a written warning for following too closely.

Fairfield Hills MVA

Motorist Matthew Iorio, 23, of Freehold, N.J., who was driving a 1998 Oldsmobile sedan westward on Wasserman Way about 2:20 pm June 13, stopped for a red traffic signal at Wasserman Way’s intersection with Trades Lane, and was struck from behind by westbound motorist Blair Balmforth, 19, of 44-A Bennetts Bridge Road, who was driving a 1992 Mercury Tracer, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Balmforth a written warning for following too closely.

High School Accident

Motorist Sean O’Mahoney, 18, of 1 Willow Brook Lane, who was driving a 2001 Volkswagen JGS, entered Berkshire Road from the Newtown High School driveway about 8 am June 6, and collided with motorist Nevin Eberly, 42, of 11 Pearl Street, who was driving a 2001 Ford Windstar, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued O’Mahoney a written warning for failure to grant the right of way.

 

Glover Avenue

Motorist Susan Hart, 31, of Danbury was driving a 2000 Hyundai Elantra station wagon on Glover Avenue about 7:20 pm June 13, when she was struck from behind by motorist Richard Radomski, 60, of 18 Glover Avenue, who was driving a 1994 Acura Integra, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Radomski a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

In The Road

Police said they received a complaint about a youth who was sitting in the middle of Elm Drive, near Sugar Street, on the night of June 16. Police said they went there and charged Matthew S. DeLuca, 16, of 2 Elm Drive with illegal use of a road by a pedestrian, disorderly conduct, and interfering with police.

 Police said they released DeLuca into the custody of his father for a July 1 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Car Vs Pedestrian

Police said pedestrian Ross Bonacci, 41, of 55 Sugar Street was on the westbound shoulder of Sugar Street near his residence, when motorist Shelley O’Neil, 49, of Woodbury, who was driving a 1996 Honda Accord, backed into Bonacci about 5:15 pm June 16.

Police said Bonacci received minor injuries, requiring no medical attention. Police issued O’Neil an infraction ticket bearing a charge of unsafe backing.

Two Accidents

Police report two accidents occurred in rapid succession on Glen Road in Sandy Hook about 5 pm June 15.

Police said motorist Robert Marus, 49, of 1 Housatonic Drive was driving a 1994 Chrysler Concorde LHS northward near 68 Glen Road, when he fell asleep and drifted off the right side of the road, striking some shrubbery and a stone wall.

Soon thereafter, northbound motorist Michael Johnson, 39, of Belmar, N.J., who was driving a 2001 Ford Ranger pickup truck, struck a rock that had fallen into the northbound lane from the stone wall, police said.

Marus received hand and nose injuries, and obtained medical attention at the accident scene from the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, police said. Marus received a written warning for making a restricted turn, police said.

Johnson was not injured and police took no enforcement action against him.

 

Stop & Shop

Police said that at about 5 pm on June 17, Super Stop & Shop store security personnel spotted Michael Kalas, 17, of 6 Avalon Way allegedly place several packs of cigarettes in his pocket and then leave the supermarket at Sand Hill Plaza on South Main Street.

Security personnel called police to the store, after which police charged Kalas with sixth-degree larceny. Police released Kalas on a promise to appear July 3 in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charge.

Laptop Missing

At 9 am on June 5, a laptop computer was reported missing from a gymnasium office in the A-Wing at Newtown Middle School at 11 Queen Street, police said.

The computer is worth $1,200. Police are investigating.

Route 34 Accident

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Route 34 and Zoar Road about 4:15 pm June 18.

Motorist Harry Walsh, 76, of 2 Russett Road, who was driving a 1991 Cadillac DeVille, was turning from Zoar Road onto Route 34, when he collided with motorist Janice Moscato, 28, of Shelton, who was driving a 2002 Ford Explorer on Route 34, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Walsh and infraction ticket for failure to grant the right of way.
