Visiting Artists At Weir Farm: Work By Susan Miiller
WILTON â The Weir Farm Trust and the National Park Service at Weir Farm National Historic Site is continuing its âArtists at Weir Farmâ series â exhibitions in the siteâs visitor center that feature the works of recent visiting and resident artists to the site â with the paintings of Susan Miiller.
Susan Miiller was a Weir Farm artist-in-residence in August 2001. She is a painter who works with natural forms â trees and landscape vistas â to create abstract monochromatic images that are at once dreamy and inspiring. Her work is on view until September 1.
Of her work, Ms Miiller says, âI make my landscape paintings a viable means of contemporary expression by tugging at the confines of landscape tradition.â She employs a subtractive technique, first covering the canvas with large color fields, then stripping away paint to reveal her final forms.
Susan Miiller received her master of fine arts in painting in 1992 from the University of North Texas. She has exhibited extensively in museums and galleries throughout the United States including the Museum of New Mexico, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Dallas Museum of Art, and the Continental Gallery, Dallas, Tex.
Weir Farm National Historic Site, Connecticutâs only National Park Service unit, preserves the summer home and workplace of Julian Alden Weir (1852-1919), a leading figure in American art and the development of American Impressionism. The house, studios, farm buildings and landscape integral to Weirâs artistic vision survive largely intact, and make it one of the finest remaining landscapes of American Impressionism.
The 18th Century farm has been used continuously by artists since 1882.
The Visitor Center is open Wednesday to Sunday, 8:30 am to 5 pm. Tours of the historic studios are offered each Wednesday to Saturday at 11 am and 1 pm and 3 pm, and each Sunday at 1 and 3.
