Rotarians Contribute To Local Organizations
Newtownâs Rotary Club has contributed to five local organizations to help them in their community service efforts. The Rotaryâs close connections to other local service organizations was evident at the presentation ceremony. Four of the organizations were represented by Rotarians and the fifth by the wife of a local Rotarian.
The Labor Day Parade Committee was represented by Rotarian Brian Amey and Ann Marie Deweese. The Parade Committee reported that it was desperate for contributions this year and Rotaryâs donation was greatly appreciated. Other organizations were urged to help the Parade Committee in its fundraising efforts. It was noted that if each household contributed $5 to $10, the committee would easily reach its goal.
The Dorothy Day House was represented by Rotarian Jim Gulalo, who organizes the menu, cooking, and Rotary volunteers when it is Newtown Rotaryâs turn to staff the soup kitchen. On average, approximately 100 people are served each time the Rotarians work at the kitchen.
Rotarian Larry Nkabinde accepted a check for the Hord Foundation, of which he is a member. The foundation awards approximately 70 scholarships of $1,000 to $3,000 annually to needy students in the Danbury area.
The Danbury Area Literacy Volunteers Association was represented by Ellen Parrella, wife of Rotarian Fred Parrella. Mrs Parrella has been actively involved with the literacy group for many years and is rightfully proud that so many of her clients can now read and write.
Rotarian Ed Osterman, as a director of Newtown Housing for the Elderly, accepted a check which will be sued by NHE to hold outdoor and indoor social events for the many residents of Nunnawauk Meadows. There are currently approximately 150 residents living in 120 apartments.
Newtown Rotary is dedicated to improving life in the community, the area, and the world. Anyone who might be interested in learning more about Rotary is urged to call Duane Baumert at 426-8895 or Ed Osterman at 426-0530.
