Bicycle Theft

Police report the theft of a locked red bicycle from a bicycle stand in the south parking lot of Newtown Middle School on Queen Street. The owner noticed the bicycle missing at 7:30 pm June 18.

Missing is the Blade model of the Magna brand. Police ask anyone with information on the theft to contact them at 426-5841.

Flagpole Collision

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Main Street and Church Hill Road at about 5:50 pm on June 19.

Motorist Steven Morse, 17, of East Hampton, who was driving a 1992 Honda Accord westbound on Church Hill Road, stopped at a stop sign, and then pulled into the intersection and collided with a 1991 Ford Explorer, which was being driven northbound on Main Street by Juliana Marcia, 27, of Danbury, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Morse an infraction ticket on a stop sign violation.

Intersection Crash

A two-car accident occurred at the intersection of Maltbie Road and Castle Meadow Road about 4:20 pm June 18.

The collision involved a 2001 Honda ULC driven by Maryjo Pecora-Runkle, 40, of 23 Maltbie Road, which carried three passengers, and a 1993 Honda Accord driven by Carmela Procacchi, 81, of Trumbull, which carried two passengers, police said. There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Pecora-Runkle for making an improper turn.

School Bus Accident

Police report an accident between a large school bus carrying seven student passengers and a pickup truck on Brushy Hill Road, near Huntingtown Road, about 10:35 am June 18. There were no injuries. The ages of the child passengers on the bus were not available.

Cindy A. Fogliano, 38, of 189 Brushy Hill Road was driving a 1998 International 3000 school bus eastbound on Brushy Hill Road, as motorist Lee R. Manna, 33, of 12 Evergreen Road was driving a 1995 Ford F-350 pickup truck westbound there, police said.

As the two vehicles passed, their left-side, exterior rear-view mirrors collided, police said. Police said both vehicles are large and the road is narrow in the area. Police said no fault was determined in the accident and no enforcement was taken.

Riverside Road Theft

Police said that sometime between April 30 and May 21, someone stole a Sony VCR, a Sony camcorder, a Yamaha stereo receiver, and a Craftsman electric nail gun from storage boxes in the garage of a Riverside Road residence. The value of the stolen items is about $1,230, police said.

Police ask anyone with information about the theft to contact them at 426-5841.

Wheels Off Truck

Motorist Jonathan Wildman, 30, of Monroe was taking a curve in the road on Route 302, at Hattertown Road, in a 1988 Dodge W-300 truck at about 7 pm June 7, when the rear axle on the truck broke, resulting a dual wheel assembly rolling away from the truck and striking some fencing at 2 Hattertown Road, police said. There were no injuries or enforcement actions.

Tilson Woods

Police report a first-degree larceny at Lot 23 on Pearl Street in the new Tilson Woods residential subdivision off Washington Avenue in Sandy Hook.

Sometime between 9:15 am on June 14 and 7:30 am on June 17, someone broke into a locked equipment trailer on that lot, damaging the trailer and stealing many tools.

The stolen tools and trailer damage have an estimated value of $15,400. Police are investigating and ask anyone with information on the crime to contact them at 426-5841.

Fairfield Hills

Police said motorist Erik Valko, 23, of Bridgeport was driving westbound on Wasserman Way about 2 pm June 22, when as he approached the traffic signal at the intersection of Wasserman Way and Trades Lane, he entered the “Left Turn Only” lane and drove straight through the intersection, attempting to pass another vehicle.

Police stopped Valko and charged him with failure to obey a state traffic commission sign and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.

Police released Valko for a July 9 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Bicycle Vs Auto

Police report an accident between a bicyclist and an auto, which occurred about 6 pm June 20 in front of Edmond Town Hall on Main Street, during a bicycle fundraising event to benefit AIDS victims.

Police said motorist Peter Lagnese, 21, of 9 Pebble Road was driving a 1988 Honda Prelude northbound on Main Street and was waiting to turn left into the town hall driveway, as a solid line of southbound motorists passed by during the AIDS bicycle event. The bicyclists were traveling southbound.

A southbound motorist then stopped to allow Lagnese turn left, so Lagnese turned the Honda, but had not noticed an approaching southbound bicyclist, police said.

Southbound bicyclist Kristen Handriken, 34, of Cambridge, Mass., struck the right side of the auto, police said. Handriken received treatment for leg abrasions at Danbury Hospital.

Police issued Lagnese an infraction ticket for making an improper turn.

Boggs Hill Road

Motorist Linda Strange, 38, of Southbury was driving on Boggs Hill Road about 11 pm June 22, and as she approached that road’s intersection with Sugar Street, she struck some guardrailing, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Strange a written warning for making an improper turn.

Toddy Hill Crash

Southbound motorist Clare Tallon, 38, of 62 Toddy Hill Road, who was driving a 1999 Ford Expedition sport-utility vehicle southbound on Toddy Hill Road about 3:20 pm June 14, pulled to the side of the road to let an ambulance pass by, after which southbound motorist Mary Lewis, 55, of 52 Mt Nebo Road, who was driving a 1993 Buick Park Avenue, hit the rear end of the Ford, police said.

Tallon experienced neck pain, police said. Police issued Lewis a written warning for following too closely.

Sugar Street

Motorist Debra Sullivan, 46, of 32 Farm Field Ridge Road, who was driving a 1999 Toyota 4-Runner sport-utility vehicle eastbound on Sugar Street near Main Street about 4 pm June 19, was stopped in a line of traffic, when she was struck from behind by eastbound motorist Eric Critelli, 17, of 114 Head O’ Meadow Road, who was driving a 1995 Volkswagen Jetta, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Critelli a written warning for following too closely.

 

Church Hill Mishap

Eastbound motorist Nancy Simon, 47, of Stratford, who was driving a 2002 Saturn L-200, slowed for traffic on Church Hill Road about 3 pm June 14, when she was struck from behind by eastbound motorist Brian Hallock, 41, of Danbury, who was driving a 1999 Hyundai Accent, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Hallock a misdemeanor summons for a Danbury Superior Court appearance on charges of following too closely and have failure to carry automotive insurance.

Dodgingtown Collision

Police report a two-car accident at the intersection of Poverty Hollow Road and Hattertown Road about 5 pm June 23.

While stopped at a stop sign at the intersection on southbound Hattertown Road, motorist Alexander Schonleben, 73, of Danbury, who was driving a 1994 Cadillac, rolled backward and collided with the front end of a 2002 Toyota Camry driven by Ann Guerrera, 69, of Trumbull, police said.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Schonleben for improper backing.

Three Vehicles

Motorist David Mena, 23, of Danbury, who was driving a 1995 Honda Accord southbound on South Main Street near Cold Spring Road about 4:45 pm June 19, suddenly turned right into the Botsford Drive-In, police said. As the Honda turned to the right, it was struck on the right side by southbound motorist Vincent Lorusso, 42, of Brewster, N.Y., who was driving a 1993 Ford Explorer sport-utility vehicle, police said.

The Explorer kept traveling and then struck motorist Thomas Westerman, 53, of Huntington, who was driving a 1998 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck, which was leaving the drive-in to enter South Main Street, police said.

There were no injuries in the three-vehicle crash, police said. Police issued Mena an infraction ticket for making an improper turn. Police gave Lorusso an infraction ticket for passing on the right.

Church Hill DUI

About midday June 23, police received a cellular telephone call from a person reporting an erratic driver on Church Hill Road.

Police said they went to the area and observed motorist Gary R. Knees, 44, of 40 Appleblossom Lane weaving as he drove on the roadway. Police said they stopped Knees at the Pizza Palace parking lot and gave him field sobriety tests, after which they charged him with driving under the influence and failure to drive to the right.

Police released Knees on a $100 bond for a July 11 appearance in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.

Reckless Driving

State police said motorist Matthew Frois, 17, of Wolcott, who was driving a 1993 Honda coupe westbound on Interstate 84 near Exit 11 about 11:30 am on June 23, was weaving in and out of traffic at high speed before he lost control and became involved in an accident. Frois was not injured. State police charged him with reckless driving.

I-84 DUI

State police said motorist Amanda Dewey, 20, of 6 Taunton Lane was driving a 1998 Mazda 626 in the right lane of three travel lanes on westbound Interstate 84, about 2,500 feet east of Exit 10 at about 3 am June 22, while trucker Robert Zukauskas, 52, of Saylorsburg, Penn., was driving a 2001 Volvo tractor-trailer truck in the road’s center lane in front of the Mazda.

Dewey lost control of the Mazda and entered the road’s center lane, colliding with the truck, state police said. Newtown firefighters went to the accident scene, state police said.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Dewey to Danbury Hospital to be checked for possible injuries, state police said.

State police said that after Dewey was released from the hospital, they charged her with driving under the influence and failure to maintain the proper lane. Dewey is scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.

Hawleyville Accident

Motorist Thomas Carney, 52, of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., who was driving a 2001 Oldsmobile sedan westbound on Interstate 84, east of Exit 9, about 5 pm on June 20, drove off the road after a motorist had abruptly changed lanes in front of the Oldsmobile, state police said. The Oldsmobile came to rest on the right road shoulder. There were no injuries or enforcement actions.

Pump Purloined

Police said that sometime overnight on June 22-23, someone stole a portable water pump from the parking lot of Curtis Packaging at 44 Berkshire Road. The pump, which is housed in a bright orange frame, is worth about $800. Anyone with information about the fourth-degree larceny is asked to contact police at 426-5841.

Dodgingtown Paintball

A Flat Swamp Road resident reported to police on June 23 that someone had shot several paintballs at the rear of her house and at her patio, leaving yellow and orange paint stains on the premises. Police ask anyone with information about the third-degree criminal mischief to contact them at 426-5841.

Hattertown Burglary

Police report that sometime between June 6 and 13 someone broke into a Hattertown Road home and stole a guitar and some jewelry. Police are investigating the burglary/larceny and ask anyone with information about the crime to contact them at 426-5841.
