James H. Shortt, 86, of Sandy Hook, “The Commander,” died peacefully June 5 at Village Crest Health and Rehabilitation Center, New Milford. He was the husband of Laura J. Shortt, who died in 2002.

He grew up on the family dairy farm in Southbury and enlisted in the US Army at the age of 18, serving with the rank of staff sergeant during the Korean War.

Following his military service, Mr Shortt operated heavy equipment for O&G Industries of Torrington and for many years was employed at the Fabric Fire Hose Company in Sandy Hook, until it closed. He then held a position for the State of Connecticut at Fairfield Hills Hospital, until his retirement in 1989.

In his retirement, Mr Shortt enjoyed working in his garden, mowing and raking his lawn, and being caretaker for an estate in Sandy Hook. He lived a fruitful life with much love and respect from his family and friends. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

He leaves his seven children and their spouses, James and Susannah of Sandy Hook, Maureen Shortt of Newtown, Terrance and Doreen, and Jeffrey Shortt and Lori Shortt, all of Florida, Richard and Laura of Brookfield, and Susan and  Rick Jowdy of Danbury. Thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a sister, Agnes Georgia of Shelton; and a brother, Eddy Shortt of Florida, also survive Mr Shortt.

The Shortt family wishes to thank the staff at Village Crest for the excellent care given to their father during his stay there.

A graveside service with full military honors took place Monday, June 16, at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Southbury.

Arrangements were in care of the Honan Funeral Home, Newtown.
