Recycling Sneakers

To the Editor:

Middle Gate School collected used sneakers for the second year. RRD-Green Team joined Nike Reuse-a-Shoe Recycling Program. St Rose also joined us in collecting sneakers. They collected all sizes of used sneakers. It was a success for the second year in a row.

This year Associated Refuse Haulers of Sandy Hook donated the use of a dumpster. The sneakers must be kept dry and storage in school is a huge problem. Special thanks to Cheryl Reedy of Housatonic Regional Recycling who arranged the delivery of all the sneakers to Willimantic Waste by We Recycle. The sneakers will be recycled into Nike Grind, which will be used for walking tracks, basketball courts, playgrounds, etc.

Once again, we have proven that “It’s Nicer in Newtown.”
