Newtown Bombers Compete In Bethel Tourney
The Newtown Bombers, an 11-year-old baseball team, competed in the Bethel Tournament this past weekend.
The Bombers came from behind to defeat Brookfield 12-10 in extra innings in the first game which started on Saturday and was continued the next day because of rain.
Trailing 4-0 in the first, Newtown got on the board with hits by Mason Melillo, Matthew Elias and Devin Luzietti to produce a pair of runs. In the top of the fourth inning the Bombers rallied again. Declan Sullivan led off with a single, Steven Britten followed with a single to left and Melillo hit the ball to short to score Sullivan. Elias followed with a hit scoring Britten and Luzietti singled. Sam Czel hit a single to score two runs for a 6-4 lead.
Brookfield came back to take an 8-6 lead. When the rain started to fall the game was suspended in the fifth inning and the bases loaded for Brookfield.
On Sunday, when the game resumed, Curtis Williamson went to the mound and allowed two inherited runners to score but held Brookfield to a 10-6 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Ethan Carpenter hit a double, Kyle Mcgrath singled up the middle and Melillo hit the ball to short to enable Carpenter to score. With two outs, Elias drove in Mcgrath to cut the deficit to 10-8. Luzietti followed with a hit. With runners on second and third Erik Street hit the ball to center to score two runs.
Melillo came in to pitch extra innings and did not allow a hit and walked one. In the top of the seventh inning, Sullivan led off with a hit, Melillo reached on an error and Sam Czel singled to plate Sullivan and Melillo for a the lead. Elias pitched five innings and struck out five batters and Melillo got the win.Â
Newtown advanced to play Bethel and lost 1-0 on Sunday to drop into the tournamentâs loserâs bracket.
Melillo pitched four innings, had four strikeouts and allowed a run and one hit. Czel (two strikeouts) pitched the last two innings and allowed only a hit.
Elias hit a blast to the fence for a double and Street and Sullivan added singles for the Bombers.
