Hair Studio Raises Funds To Benefit Foster Care Children

By Andrew Gorosko

To provide something extra for the children who live in foster care households, a local hair studio held a fundraising project on Sunday, May 31, during which the hair stylists donated their barbering services.

Haircuts were offered at $25 and chair massages were provided at $10. A raffle was held.

The proceeds from the cut-a-thon event, which ran from 10 am to 6 pm, exceeded $1,000, and are being donated for the benefit of foster care children, explained Denise Vadas, the owner of Genesis Hair Studio at 5 Riverside Road in Sandy Hook Center.

Haircuts were given to men, women, and children at the event. Also, face painting and balloons were provided for children.

All proceeds from the event are being donated to the Connecticut Association of Foster and Adoptive Parents (CAFAP), which is a nonprofit group.

The money will be used to help offset some of the costs incurred in providing foster care, including sports activities, music classes, and other extracurricular activities, according to Ms Vadas.

“Foster and adoptive parents are very special people who make a choice to willingly give their love, time, generosity, and home to children that are in need in the hope that they may have a brighter future,” according to Ms Vadas.

Ms Vadas enlisted the support of numerous local businesses as sponsors for the fundraiser.

She estimated that about 30 haircuts, as well as about eight chair massages, were given to participants at the event.

The state Department of Children and Families (DCF) oversees the state’s child welfare system. Children enter that system at birth or because they cannot live with their biological parents.

DCF provides support for both children and their caregivers. The agency oversees fostering, adopting, and mentoring.
